It’s time for some Saturday night hockey!
Winners of back-to-back games against some very strong opponents, the Calgary Flames (3-6-0, 6 points) are facing an Original Six opponent when they face the Detroit Red Wings (4-3-3, 11 points). The Flames will be trying to win three straight (for the first time in awhile) while wearing their 2004 retro jerseys, against an opponent who keeps finding a way to earn points.
Today’s broadcast begins at 8 p.m. MT on Sportsnet West and QR Calgary! Tune in for Warmies before the game and After Burner following the game on the Barn Burner YouTube channel!

The Flames

Projected lines via Daily Faceoff:
Aydar Suniev – Morgan Frost – Yegor Sharangovich
Joel Farabee – Ben Jones – Matt Coronato
Matvei Gridin – Martin Pospisil – Ryan Strome
Brennan Othmann – Jonathan Castagna – Adam Klapka
Kevin Bahl – Simon Nemec
Jake Middleton – Zach Whitecloud
Yan Kuznetsov – Zayne Parekh
Devin Cooley is slated to start in net for the third straight game, backed up by Dustin Wolf. The healthy scratches look to be Joel Hanley and Maxim Tsyplakov. Mikael Backlund will miss his second game in a row with an upper body injury.
After a rough start, the Flames have won back-to-back games and three out of their last four. They’ve been playing some pretty good hockey – not world-beating, but quite competitive – and they’ve gotten good special teams performances, timely goals and timely saves. The roster is what the roster is, but the Flames are a scrappy bunch who aspire to being, at the very least, a tough night at the office for whoever they face.

The Red Wings

Projected lines via Daily Faceoff:
Alex Debrincat – Emmitt Finnie – Viktor Arvidsson
Michael Brandsegg-Nygard – Dylan Larkin – Lucas Raymond
Michael Rasmussen – Andrew Copp – J.T. Compher
Carter Mazur – Nate Danielson – Keegan Kolesar
Ben Chiarot – Moritz Seider
William Willander – Justin Faulk
Albert Johansson – Anton Johansson
John Gibson will be in net, backed up by Michal Postava. The projected extras are Andreas Englund and Axel Sandin-Pellikka. The Red Wings beat Vancouver by a 5-2 score on Thursday, but Gibson left the game early due to having something in his eye. He’s good to go for Saturday night.
The Red Wings started 1-3-0 this season, but they’ve earned points in each of their last six games (going 3-0-3). They’re missing some key players, but they’re a group that just finds ways to be a tough out, and they’ve gotten contributions from up and down their lineup.

Unavailable players

The Flames are without Jonathan Huberdeau, Sam Honzek and Mikael Backlund.
The Red Wings are without Marco Kasper, Mason Appleton, Simon Edvinsson and Daniil Tarasov.
