The Calgary Flames are on a three-game winning streak, and Devin Cooley is a big reason why.
This past week, the Flames’ netminder won both games he played in, posting a .971 save percentage while stopping 66 of 68 shots. On Monday, the National Hockey League announced that he was the second star of the week.
The first game was against the Minnesota Wild, a game which the Flames won 2-1. Cooley was terrific again, stopping 38 of 39 shots for a .974 save percentage and a 2.46 Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx). The netminder and the Flames wrapped up their week with a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings, with Cooley stopping 28 of 29 shots for a .966 save percentage and 1.66 GSAx.
It’s his third consecutive game where he’s essentially been the reason why the Flames have won. He back stopped the Flames to a 3-2 victory over the defending Stanley Cup champions, the Carolina Hurricanes last Sunday. The netminder stopped 34 of 36 shots for a .944 save percentage in that game, with a 1.79 GSAx.
Cooley had a tough start to his season, allowing 10 goals over his first 55 shots. Despite that, he’s worked his way up to a .913 save percentage and 2.80 goals against average. Among netminders with five or more games played, Cooley’s save percentage is good for 11th in the NHL.
Over the past two seasons, only five netminders with 30 or more games played have a better save percentage than Cooley, Scott Wedgewood, Jesper Wallstedt, Igor Shesterkin, and Joel Hofer. That’s some good company to be in, especially in a rebuilding season for the Flames.
All three stars of the week play for Canadian-based teams. Edmonton Oilers’ forward Leon Draisaitl was named first star thanks to six goals and nine points in three games. A fellow netminder, Montréal Canadiens’ Jacob Fowler, was named third star of the week thanks to a .964 save percentage in two games played.
