The Flames’ string of strong efforts hit some big snags in Edmonton

After a couple weeks of good efforts and positive results, the Calgary Flames did a few things on Wednesday night against the Edmonton Oilers that they haven’t done in awhile.
The big one was, well, they lost, dropping a 4-0 result to the Oilers to throw the brakes on their winning streak after four games.
For the first time since the second period of last Sunday’s game against Carolina, they trailed during a game. The Oilers opened the scoring 7:46 into the first period, as Connor McDavid threw a pass across the slot to a wide-open Mathieu Joseph, joining the rush late off the bench. He beat Devin Cooley to give Edmonton a 1-0 lead.
For the first time this season, and first time since Mar. 30 last season, the Flames used both of their goaltenders in a game. Devin Cooley suffered an injury at the end of the first period after Oilers forward Colton Dach crashed into him while driving the net.
Speaking to the media post-game, Flames head coach Ryan Huska had no updates on Cooley’s injury.
“He just left the game ‘cause of a lower body injury. I don’t really have much more than that right now,” said Huska, via Flames TV. “He just talked to the trainer at that point. The call was made then to remove him from the game.”
For the first time since Oct. 13, Dustin Wolf got some game action, replacing Cooley to begin the second period. He was beaten on a screened point shot from Mattias Ekholm on the first shot he faced, 4:52 into the second period, but ended up making 20 saves in relief.
“It’s never easy for a goalie to come in mid-game, no matter what the score or situation,” said Flames captain Mikael Backlund, via Flames TV. “I thought he battled. Again, it’s never easy.”
“He just needs to play,” said Huska. “That’s all it is, is get his back up a little bit and just go play. He’s a really good goaltender and gives us a chance to win every time he’s in the net.”
For the first time since Mar. 10 last season, the Flames were shut out. They scored 14 goals over their previous four games, all wins, often by using speed, skill, and their willingness to crash the net. They weren’t as effective in generating dangerous chances against Edmonton as they had in their prior four outings.
“This, for two periods, was a really hard game,” said Huska. “There was not a lot of room on the ice. It was more of a grind type game. Certain players, I felt, for us could’ve been much harder than they were tonight in those sort of situations and I think that might’ve been the result of the sporadic going to the net harder type thing.”
“I thought maybe we were a little too much on the perimeter, on the outside a little bit today compared to other games,” said Backlund. “We didn’t get enough traffic and bodies around. We got a lot of shots, but I think that’s something we’ve done well lately and we can do better than we did today.”
The Flames will return home to regroup, and then prepare for a couple tough games. They host the Seattle Kraken on Friday night before heading to Denver to visit the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday night.
