Coming off a weekend off and a day of practice, the Calgary Flames (9-6-3, 21 points) look to continue their winning ways on Tuesday night as they host the New York Islanders (7-7-4, 18 points). The Flames have played well this season generally, but they’ve been buoyed by strong goaltending. Can they continue this trend against the Islanders?
Today’s broadcast begins at 7 p.m. MT on Sportsnet One and Sportsnet 960 The Fan.

Coming off a shutout, Dustin Wolf gets a second start in a row, backed up by Dan Vladar. (When Vladar got a shutout, he was also given a second start, which seems to be the exception to the goaltending alternating they’ve done.) The projected extras are Adam Klapka, Tyson Barrie and Joel Hanley.
Do the Flames score tons of goals? No. Are their special teams great? No. And yeah, those are things they’re trying to fix. But they’ve defended well and gotten strong goaltending, and that’s been enough to give them a fighting chance in just about every game they’ve played this season. It might not be great for the team’s prospects of getting a high draft pick, but it’s a really positive step for a team looking to build a foundation for success down the road.
The Islanders

Semyon Varlamov is expected to start in net, backed up by Ilya Sorokin. The projected extras are Hudson Fasching, Travis Mitchell and Grant Hutton.
The Islanders have had a tough year so far. They’ve had injuries to key players at bad times, and as a result they haven’t been able to get any traction in the standings. It’s been win-one, lose-one for the last while. And while nobody’s run away with the Metropolitan Division quite yet, the Islanders are letting an opportunity to grab hold of a prime spot in the standings slip away through all the close games they’re losing. They can still turn it around, but the clock is ticking.
Unavailable players
The Flames are without Anthony Mantha.
The Islanders are without Anthony Duclair, Mathew Barzal, Adam Pelech and Mike Reilly.
