A few days after suffering their first setback of the season, the Calgary Flames (4-0-1, 9 points) begin their first lengthy homestand of the season on Tuesday night when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins (3-4-0, 6 points) at the Saddledome in what’s probably one of Sidney Crosby’s final three visits to the building. The Flames are looking to get back into the win column, while the Penguins are desperate to find some momentum in a challenging early part of their season.
Tonight’s broadcast begins at 7:30 p.m. MT on Sportsnet One and Sportsnet 960 The Fan. The odd timing is part of ESPN’s annual Frozen Frenzy slate of games, where their coverage features parts of many, many games across the league – and results in every game’s start time being staggered from each other by 15 minutes.
The Flames
Here’s tonight’s expected lines via Sportsnet’s Pat Steinberg:
Andrei Kuzmenko – Nazem Kadri – Matt Coronato
Jonathan Huberdeau – Martin Pospisil – Anthony Mantha
Connor Zary – Mikael Backlund – Blake Coleman
Ryan Lomberg – Justin Kirkland – Adam Klapka

Ryan Lomberg – Justin Kirkland – Adam Klapka
Kevin Bahl – Rasmus Andersson
MacKenzie Weegar – Daniil Miromanov
Jake Bean – Brayden Pachal

Jake Bean – Brayden Pachal
We’re projecting Dustin Wolf to start in net (continuing their goalie rotation), backed up by Dan Vladar – Steinberg has also noted on social media that Wolf is expected to start. The projected healthy extras are Joel Hanley and Tyson Barrie. After taking a seat as a spectator on Saturday night, Miromanov slots back in and Barrie rotates out.
The Flames weren’t particularly good on Saturday against Seattle. But even at that level, they were able to grind out a point against a divisional foe. Early on this season, a lot has been working for the Flames – they have five players scoring at or above a point-per-game pace and 19 of 21 skaters are even or better in plus/minus – but the challenge will be maintaining enough positive components of their game that they can survive even when they’re not at their best.
After scoring just once against Seattle, we’re curious if the Flames can generate more dangerous scoring chances than they did on Saturday.
The Penguins
Here’s how the Penguins lined up on Sunday:
Drew O’Connor – Sidney Crosby – Bryan Rust
Rickard Rakell – Evgeni Malkin – Jesse Puljujarvi
Anthony Beauvillier – Lars Eller – Cody Glass
Kevin Hayes – Noel Acciari – Valtteri Puustinen

Kevin Hayes – Noel Acciari – Valtteri Puustinen
Matt Grzelcyk – Kris Letang
Marcus Pettersson – Erik Karlsson
Ryan Graves – Ryan Shea

Ryan Graves – Ryan Shea
The Penguins are currently carrying three goaltenders: Tristan Jarry, Alex Nedeljkovic and Joel Blomqvist. Jarry was said to be particularly bad in his first two outings this season – per the Athletic’s Josh Yohe – and Nedeljkovic (per Yohe) is expected to start against the Flames. Their projected healthy extras look to be Jack St. Ivany and Michael Bunting.
The Penguins have alternated wins and losses for much of this season, but they’ve lost a pair in a row and are in danger of doing into a full-on slide if they fall short against the Flames. Expect a motivated, focused opponent for the Flames on Tuesday evening.
Unavailable players
The Flames are without Yegor Sharangovich, Kevin Rooney and Sam Honzek.
The Penguins are without Matt Nieto and Blake Lizotte.
