Less than 24 hours after each club lost in their Saturday games, the Calgary Flames (28-23-8, 64 points) will clash with the Carolina Hurricanes (34-22-4, 72 points) as both clubs look to bounce back. The Flames lost 3-0 to Florida, while the Hurricanes lost 3-1 to Edmonton. Can the Flames find a way to score some goals and get some points in a rapidly-crowding Western Conference wild-card race?
Today’s broadcast begins at 3 p.m. MT on Sportsnet West and Sportsnet 960 The Fan.
The Flames
Here’s how the Flames looked in the third period against Florida:

Jonathan Huberdeau – Morgan Frost – Matt Coronato

Ryan Lomberg – Kevin Rooney – Joel Farabee

We’re projecting Dustin Wolf to make the start in net in the second half of this back-to-back set, backed up by Dan Vladar. Saturday’s extras were Daniil Miromanov, Jake Bean and Adam Klapka. We’ll see if any of them rotate in.
Update: Wolf starts; Sharangovich, Solovyov & Pachal out; Klapka, Bean and Miromanov in against Carolina.
Jonathan Huberdeau scored a goal with 4:28 left in the third period in Tuesday’s win over Washington. Since then, the Flames have put 52 shots on Andrei Vasilevskiy and Sergei Bobrovsky… and scored zero goals. Yes, those are two really good goalies. Yes, the Lightning and Panthers are tough teams to generate a lot against. But the Flames simply need to be better; they’re 2-2-0 since coming back from the break.
The Flames have put themselves in a situation where they can potentially make the playoffs. But they need to find another level to their game and battle their way in. That won’t happen if they play any more games the way they did against Florida.
The Hurricanes
Saturday’s lines via Daily Faceoff:
Andrei Svechnikov – Sebastian Aho – Mikko Rantanen
Jordan Martinook – Jordan Staal – Seth Jarvis
Taylor Hall – Tyson Jost – Jackson Blake
Eric Robinson – Jesperi Kotkaniemi – Jack Roslovic

We’re expecting Pyotr Kochetkov to start in net, backed up by Frederik Andersen (who started on Saturday against the Oilers). Their lone extra on Saturday was Riley Stillman.
The Hurricanes are 1-3-0 since the break. On paper, they have a team with a lot of strengths. They have some talented players up and down their roster and once their group gels, they could be a scary team to face. But that hasn’t quite happened yet, and right now they’re more of a team of talented individuals than a fully realized team. But they have enough talented individuals that they’re still capable of winning games.
The Flames will flat-out need to have their pace and team game figured out if they want a chance at a victory.
Unavailable players
The Flames are without Anthony Mantha and Justin Kirkland.
The Hurricanes are without Jesper Fast and William Carrier.
