Two days after having their point streak snapped by a strong Carolina side, the Calgary Flames (5-1-1, 11 points) are back at it and hoping to get back onto the positive side of the ledger on Saturday evening when they host the Winnipeg Jets (7-0-0, 14 points). If the Flames were hoping for a respite in the schedule, bad news: the Jets are one of two undefeated clubs remaining in the NHL and undoubtedly one of the toughest opponents in the circuit.
Tonight’s broadcast begins at 5 p.m. MT on Sportsnet West and 360 and Sportsnet 960 The Fan. Beware: this game is in the earlier Hockey Night in Canada timeslot rather than the usual 8 p.m. MT one.

The Flames

Projected lines via Daily Faceoff:
Martin Pospisil – Nazem Kadri – Andrei Kuzmenko
Jonathan Huberdeau – Justin Kirkland – Anthony Mantha
Connor Zary – Mikael Backlund – Blake Coleman
Ryan Lomberg – Kevin Rooney – Adam Klapka
Kevin Bahl – Rasmus Andersson
MacKenzie Weegar – Daniil Miromanov
Jake Bean – Brayden Pachal
Continuing the goalie rotation, it’s projected to be Dustin Wolf in net with Dan Vladar backing up. The projected extras look to be Joel Hanley and Tyson Barrie. Per Sportsnet’s Pat Steinberg, Yegor Sharangovich has been activated from the IR so he’s presumably playing tonight but we won’t know in place of who until warmup.
If the Flames have a gap in their schemes, it’s their starts. More often than not this season they’ve gotten behind the eight-ball early in terms of goals, shots or scoring opportunities and had to dig their way out. It’s not so much that they get overwhelmed early on, it’s that they made some ill-timed mistakes or poor decisions early in games that they have to make up for as the game goes along. When they’ve had strong starts, they’ve had good results. Bad starts have required special efforts to overcome.

The Jets

Projected lines via Daily Faceoff:
Kyle Connor – Mark Scheifele – Gabe Vilardi
Cole Perfetti – Vladislav Namestnikov – Nikolaj Ehlers
Nino Niederreiter – Adam Lowry – Mason Appleton
Morgan Barron – Rasmus Kupari – Alex Iafallo
Josh Morrissey – Dylan DeMelo
Dylan Samberg – Neal Pionk
Logan Stanley – Colin Miller
We’re projected Connor Hellebuyck to start in goal, backed up by Eric Comrie. The projected extras are David Gustafsson, Haydn Fleury and Dylan Coghlan.
What can we say about the Jets? They have oodles of players named Dylan on their roster, and the team as a whole is really good and off to a great start. They have strong goaltending, a balanced defensive group, and a pretty deep and versatile forward group. They present a completely different challenge than Carolina did; the Hurricanes rely on speed and pace to wear opponents down, while the Jets are just big, smart and positionally sound. They rarely make big mistakes, and when they do, you have to pounce on them quickly.
