There was a bit of a scary scene at Monday’s Calgary Flames practice, per our colleagues at the rink. Per multiple reports, goaltender Jacob Markstrom took a shot off his (right) blocker hand and left the ice immediately. He did not return to practice.

The puck looked to hit the inside of Markstrom’s blocker hand where there’s less or no padding. He immediately left the ice with the training staff. Shooter tutor now in the net where Markstrom was. #Flames

Jacob Markstrom just made a save at practice and looked to take a puck off the hand. Immediately left. Will update if he comes back. #Flames

Markstrom has dressed for 21 of the Flames’ 24 games so far this season, appearing in 16 of them as the designated starter. He’s posted a 6-8-2 record with a .896 save percentage and 2.94 goals against average thus far. After a tough 2022-23 campaign, Markstrom’s really looked like his old self and performed well in the Flames’ net.
However, Markstrom’s already missed three games. He was absent for two games with a minor injury during the Flames’ eastern road swing, resulting in the recall of top prospect Dustin Wolf from the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers. He also missed the Flames’ recent game against Vegas with an illness, resulting in the signing of emergency backup goaltender Dustin Nickel for that game.
If Markstrom misses any time – and again, we don’t know that he will or won’t – it seems incredibly likely that Wolf would be summoned from the Wranglers once again.
We’ll have more on this story as it develops.
