On Friday morning, prior to the Calgary Flames’ clash with the Anaheim Ducks, head coach Ryan Huska held court with the local media.
One of the main topics: the status of a trio of injured forwards – Jonathan Huberdeau, Sam Honzek and Brennan Othmann.

Jonathan Huberdeau

Huberdeau was shut down by the Flames prior to the Olympic break in February and underwent hip resurfacing surgery in March. He started the regular season on the injury reserve list.
Back on Oct. 24, Huberdeau began skating with the team in a yellow non-contact jersey. On Friday morning, he skated in a regular jersey. There’s no timeline for his return-to-play quite yet, but swapping out a non-contact jersey for a regular one and continuing to ramp up is a benchmark in that process.
“Not reading too much into that,” said Huska. “He’s doing what he has to do right now. And he’s going to be in more of our practices here as we continue to move forward.”

Sam Honzek

Honzek was hurt a handful of games into the season and has been out with a lower body injury. He was expected to start skating on his own while the Flames were on their last road trip. Lo and behold, that’s what happened.
“Last four, maybe five days he’s been on the ice,” said Huska. “While we were on the road he was on the ice, and he was out there with Dean [Seymour, development coach] before we were on the ice today.”

Brennan Othmann

Hurt against Edmonton a week or so ago, Othmann was a participant in Friday’s morning skate and is not quite ready to return yet, but he’s getting there.
“He’s day-to-day-ish as well right now,” said Huska.
Othmann is on the active roster still, so no roster moves would be required for his return. Both Huberdeau and Honzek are on the injury reserve list, so moves would be required to open up a roster spot for either of them to return to the active roster.
