The Calgary Flames won their first home game of the season on Sunday night, putting together a pretty impressive effort against the Carolina Hurricanes. Their homestand will continue on Thursday when Blake Coleman and the Minnesota Wild come to town.
As we prepare for the ninth game of the season, let’s delve into the mailbag!
The Flames’ game production team has some cool plans for the year. They haven’t told me what they are, and I like surprises, but we can make some educated guesses. Based on what Rhett Warrener has teased on Barn Burner, the 2004 alumni will be involved in the four 2004 tribute nights in some capacity, and I think it’s reasonable to expect at least some alumni participation in saying goodbye to the Saddledome as we get into the later stages of the season.
I’m excited to see what form it takes.
So far this season, I’ve really noticed Kevin Bahl quite a bit in each game – usually for positive reasons – and his pairing with Simon Nemec has generally been quite good, despite the team’s overall results. And while they’re still fairly early in their pro journeys, I’ve liked the two call-ups, Aydar Suniev and Jonathan Castagna.
Honestly, I think it’s so far, so good on that front. I think a few things are working in the Flames’ favour right now.
First, the Flames’ ticket prices are, relative to the rest of the league, somewhat low – they were 24th in Forbes’ listing for average ticket price last season. Granted, I wouldn’t call a Flames game a cheap night out, but considering how pricey things are in other markets, they’re relatively competitive and you’re still able to pick and choose games to go to without having to get a second mortgage.
Second, the Flames have been pretty transparent about what they’re doing. They haven’t waved the white flag, but they’ve been pretty up-front with fans about their youth movement and following through on Craig Conroy’s dual pledges regarding adding youth and asset management. I think that transparency has fans on board with enjoying the integration of the kids and the team for what it is right now.
Third, the Flames have done a pretty strong job of celebrating the Saddledome’s history, between their alternate jersey plans, their merchandising and their history pieces in terms of website features and videos. So I think there are a ton of Flames fans that are gonna attend games this season that otherwise might not be as likely to do so just because it’s the final year in the ‘Dome.
I made a video on my YouTube channel that encapsulates my thoughts in detail, but here’s the gist of it: I think he’s fine as long as the Flames are competitive, in terms of their games. The name of the game right now is player development. Wins and losses don’t matter a ton, as long as the Flames are competitive in losses and have positives to take away from them that will help in player development. If they’re getting their show run for 60 minutes every night, for awhile, then it’s a much different conversation.
