After getting an National Hockey League contract on Friday, the newest official member of the Calgary Flames organization appears to be headed to the American Hockey League.

Alex Nylander, signed by the Flames to a one year, two-way contract on Friday after a successful training camp try-out, was placed on the waiver wire on Saturday. If he clears waivers, he’ll be assigned to the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers to start the season.

Nylander, 28, is the younger son of long-time NHLer (and current player agent) Michael Nylander, who played 920 NHL games between stints with Hartford, Calgary, Tampa Bay, Chicago, Washington, Boston and the NY Rangers. Michael played parts of two seasons with the Flames, 1993-94 and 1994-95, and Alex, should he get a call-up, would become the third second-generation Flame in franchise history. (John Ramage, son of Rob, and Max Reinhart, son of Paul, were the other two.) Nylander’s older brother, William, is a prominent player with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Selected in the first round, eighth overall, by Buffalo back in 2016, Alex Nylander hasn’t quite reached the heights of his brother, but he’s carved out a heck of a pro career. He’s played 126 NHL games – with Buffalo, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Columbus and Toronto – and 459 AHL games – with Rochester, Rockford, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Toronto. He spent last season with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, where he posted 24 goals and 53 points and helped the Marlies win the Calder Cup, the AHL’s league championship.

The Wranglers lost a reliable offensive player in Martin Frk to free agency over the summer, with Frk headed to the Kontinental Hockey League to join the Shanghai Dragons. Adding a veteran contributor like Nylander to their attack, should he clear the waiver wire, is a hand-in-glove fit for what the Wranglers need this season.

With Nylander being placed on waivers for AHL assignment, the Flames’ camp roster would be down to 26 players: three goalies, eight defencemen and 15 forwards. The remaining roster moves are likely waiver-exempt goaltender Kirill Zarubin to the AHL, injured forward Jonathan Huberdeau to the injury reserve, and one of forwards Aydar Suniev (waiver exempt) or Brennan Othmann (waivers required) to the AHL.

The Flames have to be down to a cap compliant 23-man active roster as of 3 p.m. MT on Monday.
