One more news item on a busy Monday for the Calgary Flames. Per multiple reports from our insider pals, the Flames have placed forward Kevin Rooney on waivers.
Rooney’s currently on the long-term injury reserve after suffering a shoulder injury during a practice during the pre-season, which resulted in surgery. He’s been recuperating from his surgery ever since.
Rooney’s been on the long-term injury reserve for much of the season, but his appearance on waivers is a likely precursor to him being activated from the LTIR and sent to the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers to resume playing. He’s very likely going to clear waivers given he’s just coming back from an injury and hasn’t played in awhile.
Rooney’s full $1.3 million cap hit has counted against the Flames’ books while he’s been injured, but it’ll drop to $150,000 when he’s sent to the AHL – $1.15 million of any deal’s cap hit can be buried. We’ll update the Flames’ cap picture once Rooney’s fate is known.
