The Calgary Flames have begun their 2026-27 season journey, with prospects training camp kicking off on Friday!

In addition to a slew of the organization’s exciting young players coming to camp, there are a few names on the camp roster that might be unfamiliar to Flames fans.

Fear not, we’ve got a breakdown of each of the players attending Flames prospects training camp on try-outs.

A product of Celina, Texas who came up in hockey through the Dallas Jr. Stars youth programs, Amrhein is an 18-year-old right shot forward who’s headed into his second season with the Western Hockey League’s Calgary Hitmen. (He was teammates with Flames prospect Axel Hurtig last season, and he’ll be teammates with Jakob Leander this season.)

Amrhein was pretty well-regarded by scouts last season for his size – 6’5″, 192 pounds – and mobility, and it was a bit of a surprise that he wasn’t drafted in June, as he was the 81st-ranked North American skater by Central Scouting. He had 31 points in 64 games with the Hitmen last season and he’ll likely play a big role for the Hitmen this coming season.

A Calgary kid who played with McKnight growing up, Andersson is a 22-year-old right shot defenceman. He’s on an AHL deal this season, and he joined the Wranglers at the tail-end of last season after captaining the Denver Pioneers to an NCAA championship. He was a really reliable, dependable defender for the Pioneers, and captured two national championships during his four seasons in Denver.

The son of former NHLer Eric Boulton, born in Atlanta during the heyday of the Thrashers, Ryder is a 20-year-old left shot forward. He attended Flames development camp over the summer and inked an AHL deal with the club. He’s not an offensive powerhouse, with the peak of his production over three years in the OHL being just eight points, but the kid brings energy and physicality and could be the successor to Alex Gallant as the Wranglers’ resident enforcer.

A Cochrane product, Boychuk is an 18-year-old right shot forward with the Western League’s Prince Albert Raiders. He was another surprising draft weekend omission; he was ranked 182nd among North American skaters by Central Scouting, but he put up 59 points in 68 games with P.A., so we’re not quite sure what the disconnect was there. He’ll have a chance to show his quality in Flames camp.

Will Dineen

Continuing Jordan Sigalet’s fascination with Russian goalkeepers, Konopsky is a 20-year-old product of Vologda, Russia. He backed up top international prospect Dmitri Borichev last season with Loko-76 Yaroslavl in Russian junior, and posted some impressive numbers in somewhat limited work: 8-5-1 with a 2.28 goals against average and .930 save percentage. He’s signed an AHL deal with the organization, and he’ll likely bounce between the Wranglers and Rapid City this season.

A Spruce Grove kid, Olson is an 18-year-old right shot forward who plays with Joe Iginla with the Western League’s Vancouver Giants. He had 30 points over 68 games last season with the Giants but wasn’t drafted, despite being the 173rd-ranked North American skater by Central Scouting. Like the others invited to camp, he has some size at 6’2″ and 190 pounds, so we’ll see how he looks among the Flames’ prospect crop over the next little bit.

A London, Ontario product, Say is a netminder that played his college hockey with Mercyhurst and Notre Dame. He signed an entry-level deal with the Flames after his junior year and spent last season with the Wranglers, before his season was cut short due to injury (and surgery). He’s on an AHL deal this season as he rebuilds his game after surgery.

One of the more fun stories in camp, Walker is a Calgary kid who played four seasons in the Western League before spending the last five seasons at Mount Royal University in USports. He went pro at the end of his collegiate season last spring, briefly playing with the ECHL’s Reading Royals before landing a call-up to the Wranglers. A left shot defender, he’s on an AHL deal for the season.

Another Calgary kid, Wilkie played college hockey at RIT and the University of North Dakota before joining the Wranglers at the very end of 2024-25. He spent last season on an AHL deal, splitting his season between the Wranglers and Rapid City. A right shot forward, he’s back on another AHL deal for this season.
