The NCAA has announced the field for their annual Division I men’s hockey national championship tournament, and Calgary Flames prospect Matt Coronato is on a team vying for the championship.
Coronato’s team, Harvard University, has qualified for the NCAA national tournament in the Bridgeport, CT regional bracket. Harvard was ranked seventh in the pairwise system and qualified as an at-large entry after losing to Colgate University on Saturday in the final of the ECAC Hockey conference tournament. They open their NCAA tournament on Friday afternoon against Ohio State.
Currently in his sophomore season, Coronato has 20 goals and 36 points in 33 games thus far. The expectation is that the Flames will try to sign Coronato to an entry-level contract at the conclusion of his college season. The earliest that Coronato’s college season could end is Friday.
The winner of the Harvard/Ohio State game on Friday would advance to play the winner of the Quinnipiac/Merrimack game in Sunday’s regional final. The regional winners advance to the Frozen Four, which takes place Apr. 6 and 8 in Tampa, Florida.
