Folks, the 2027 edition of the IIHF World Junior Championship, the premiere event for under-20 international men’s hockey, takes place this coming holiday season in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta. And it sure does seem like the Calgary Flames could be very well represented at this year’s event.
As we’re about a month into the 2026-27 season, let’s check in to see how the Flames’ prospects chances are shaping up for a trip to the World Juniors in December.
(As noted previously, Russia is ineligible for the World Juniors this year due to their ongoing war of aggression in Ukraine. As a consequence, there is no World Junior team for Alan Shaikhlislamov to play on.)

Virtual locks

We expect that the Flames will have at least four representatives at the World Juniors, in the form of Carson Carels and Cole Reschny of Canada, Theo Stockselius of Sweden, and Ethan Wyttenbach of the United States.
Carels and Reschny were both on Canada’s national junior team a year ago when they captured a bronze medal. They’re teammates at North Dakota this fall, and it would be a massive surprise if either of them don’t slot onto Canada’s roster again this winter.
Stockselius was highly-rated by the Swedish brass last year, but he suffered a skate cut early in the season and didn’t return to action until mid-January. If not for the skate cut, he probably would’ve been on Sweden’s World Junior team.
Wyttenbach led the NCAA in scoring last year as a freshman. He was superb at the Summer Showcase. He’s already off to a strong start to his sophomore season. He’s a shoo-in.

Strong chances

Three more Flames could work their way onto World Junior rosters, depending on how things go for them between now and December: Chase Harrington of Canada, and Jack Hextall and Cullen Potter of the United States.
Now the captain of the Western League’s Spokane Chiefs, Harrington is a menace on the ice. Opponents hate him, teammates love him. He can crash, bang, agitate, and score. He regularly rattles off hat tricks, both of the traditional and Gordie Howe variety. Harrington’s a really good, versatile player, and unless Canada opts to cast role players in depth roles, bringing Harrington as an 18-year-old would make a ton of sense.
Hextall and Potter are teammates at Michigan State. Hextall is a freshman and Potter is a sophomore. Potter had a slow start offensively last year at Arizona State and missed the cut. Both Hextall and Potter have showed well thus far for Michigan State, where Team USA bench boss Adam Nightingale is head coach. If nothing else, he’ll know what each guy can bring to a team.

Longshots

Seven more Flames prospects are eligible for World Junior consideration, but will likely be longshots due to the competitive nature of their national team rosters and their respective performances thus far this season. The longshots are Joe Iginla and Aidan Lane of Canada, Simon Katolicky and Tobias Trejbal of Czechia, Bode Laylin and Mace’o Phillips of the United States, and Jakob Leander of Sweden.
They’re all quality players, but just really in tough for national team spots right now.
