Calgary Flames prospects Zayne Parekh and Etienne Morin invited to Canada’s Summer Showcase camp

A pair of Calgary Flames blueline prospects will be vying for Canadian World Junior roster spots this summer.
Zayne Parekh and Etienne Morin were named to Hockey Canada’s Summer Showcase camp roster on Tuesday.
42 players were named to the camp roster, with Parekh and Morin being two of the 13 defencemen included.
Parekh is a 2006 birthday, and he’s eligible to play for Canada’s national junior team both this year and next year. He was selected by the Flames at ninth overall in the recent 2024 NHL Draft after a monster year with the Saginaw Spirit. (“Monster” may be an understatement.) He had 33 goals and 96 points, leading all Ontario Hockey League blueliners offensively, and he helped lead the Spirit to a Memorial Cup championship. He was awarded the trophies for being the top blueliner in both the OHL and all of Canadian junior hockey.
Internationally, Parekh has represented Canada at the Under-17 Hockey Challenge and the Hlinka Gretzky Cup (capturing gold). (He would’ve been a shoo-in for the Under-18 World Championships roster, but he was tied up with Saginaw’s playoff and Memorial Cup run.) Based on international pedigree and the sheer “great at hockey” factory, Parekh seems like a strong contender for a blueline spot at Christmas.
Morin is a 2005 birthday, and this is his final year of World Junior eligibility. He was selected by the Flames at 48th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft. He had a superb draft season with Moncton, posting 72 points in 67 games, before taking a step back offensively last season with 49 points in 48 games.
Internationally, Morin has represented Canada at the Under-18 World Championships in his draft year, where he helped the team capture a bronze medal. He’s probably a bit more of a roster long-shot than Parekh is, but he’s still a pretty highly regarded offensive prospect, so we’re not prepared to completely count him out.
The Summer Showcase takes place July 28-Aug.3, with Canada’s camp taking place in Windsor, Ontario (July 28-30) before shifting to Plymouth, Michigan for USA Hockey’s tournament. Flames prospect Axel Hurtig will be representing Sweden at the event.
