Good news, everybody!

Remember roughly a month ago when Sportsnet 960 The Fan, beloved sports radio station, ceased operations? Everybody was pretty bummed about losing a touchstone spot for Calgary Flames fans – and sports fans in general – and were wondering what was coming next? Heck, the most common question we received in the mailbag for the past month was some version of “Hey, will I be able to listen to games on the radio?”

On Wednesday, the Flames announced that they’ve reached a five year radio broadcast agreement with Corus Entertainment to air radio calls of their games on QR 77 (770 AM).

Here’s what Calgary Sports and Entertainment Corporation president and CEO Robert Hayes commented in the media release:

The deal runs from 2026-27 though the conclusion of the 2030-31 campaign. The media release also mentions future announcements yet to come, including details about Flames Now, “a daily sports talk show being developed on QR Calgary, providing fans with a platform to explore game analysis, hear the latest in Flames news, and more.”

If QR 770 sounds familiar to you, they’re the station that’s broadcast Calgary Stampeders radio calls for as long as I can remember. They also formerly broadcast Flames games back in the day, prior to the rights shifting to 660 CFR – and later to Sportsnet 960 The Fan. (QR carried games from 1980-1990, initially on 810 AM until 1986 and later on 770 AM, then 660 CFR did from 1990 until 2001, at which point they shifted to FAN 960.) Corus also owns the Global network of local TV stations and a slew of AM and FM radio stations throughout Canada, so it’s likely that you’re familiar with their work.

If the goal was to make sure that Flames fans retained access to game coverage with as low a barrier to access as possible, this is a great move for everybody. We look forward to seeing how QR 77 builds out their coverage, and their announcements to come.
