They’re back!

On Thursday morning, after many teases, QR Calgary’s Sarah Crosbie finally made two fairly significant sports radio announcements during the morning show.

The announcements were as follows:

There will presumably be other subsequent announcements and clarifications in the coming weeks as we inch closer to the start of the season, including who the colour commentator will be working alongside Wills. We don’t have all of the details quite yet.

But consider where we were six weeks ago when Rogers shuttered Sportsnet 960 The Fan (as part of broader cuts across the country): no sports radio and no indication as to who would fill the void. At the very least, there will be some continuity for Flames fans on the radio airwaves going forward, and that’s a very good thing.

Previously the voice of the American Hockey League’s Hamilton Bulldog from 2001-2014, Wills took over the play-by-play role from the retiring Hockey Hall of Famer, the late Peter Maher. Since arriving in the Calgary market, Wills has done a great job putting his own stamp on the role, and he’s become a big part of the fan experience over the past 13 seasons. As revealed on QR Calgary on Thursday, he’ll reach the 1,000 NHL games called milestone – consecutively! – later this season.

Meanwhile, Steinberg has been part of Flames radio broadcasts for seemingly forever. Originally working overnights on Sportsnet 960 back in the day, his role grew, eventually taking over the post-game call-in show from Rob Kerr and later taking over pre and post-game hosting duties as well.

We’ll obviously have more details on a lot of the specifics in the coming days and weeks, but you’ll have some familiar voices and faces to help navigate through the final year of Flames hockey at the Scotiabank Saddledome (and the first year at Scotia Place in 2027-28).
