The Calgary Flames have locked up a big piece of their hockey club for the next two seasons. As first reported by PuckPedia, the Flames have signed restricted free agent goaltender Dustin Wolf to a two-year contract.
The deal is a two-way deal in 2024-25 worth $850,000 at the NHL level and $275,000 at the AHL level, with $375,000 guaranteed. Coincidentally, the 2024-25 campaign is the last year of Wolf’s waiver exemption. In 2025-26, it’s a one-way deal worth $850,000.
Wolf, 23, was the Flames’ seventh-round pick in 2019. In the five seasons since being drafted, he’s been a very good ice hockey goaltender. He was the Western Hockey League’s top goaltender in 2019-20 and 2020-21, and then the American Hockey League’s top goaltender in 2021-22 and 2022-23. He was also the AHL’s most valuable player in 2022-23. He wasn’t named the AHL’s top goaltender in 2023-24 because he spent a third of the season in the NHL, filling in for injuries to Jacob Markstrom and Dan Vladar.
Here’s what we know about Wolf as a pro:
- He’s a phenomenal AHL goaltender; he’s gone 97-32-10 with 11 shutouts, a 2.29 goals against average and .926 save percentage over 141 appearances.
- He’s a decent NHL goaltender under a really limited sample size; he’s 8-7-1 with an 3.03 goals against average and .896 save percentage over 18 appearances.
With Markstrom’s departure to New Jersey, many are speculating that it’s Wolf Season. He’s not guaranteed an NHL spot, but between his contractual situation and performance to this point, he’s going to be given every chance to play a ton with the Flames going forward.
With Wolf’s signing, the Flames have five remaining restricted free agents: blueliners Ilya Solovyov and Yan Kuznetsov, and forwards Jakob Pelletier, Cole Schwindt and Adam Klapka.
