On the eve of training camp, the Calgary Flames have gotten their last remaining players signed. On Wednesday, the club announced that they’ve re-signed restricted free agents Ilya Solovyov and Cole Schwindt to new contracts.
Solovyov received a two year deal with a $775,000 cap hit. It’s a two-way deal in 2024-25 with $125,000 in AHL salary and a $150,000 salary guarantee, then becomes a one-way pact in 2025-26.
Schwindt received a one year, two-way deal worth $800,000 at the NHL level, $100,000 at the AHL level, and includes a $165,0000 salary guarantee.
Solovyov is a 24-year-old left shot defenceman. Originally a seventh-round selection in the 2020 NHL Draft – selected in his second year of draft eligibility – Solovyov has quietly become one of the Flames’ most reliable blueliners in their system. Does he move the needle offensively? Not really. Does he prevent the other team from doing that with his physical and positional work in his own zone? Certainly.
Solovyov has played 10 NHL games and he’s played three seasons in the Flames’ system. Because of his late July birthday, he becomes potentially eligible to become a Group VI unrestricted free agent when his deal expires on July 1, 2026 – unless he plays 70 NHL games over the next two seasons, at which point he would remain an RFA (with arbitration rights) instead.
Schwindt is a 23-year-old right shot forward who plays centre and the wing. He was a third-round selection in the 2019 NHL Draft by Florida, then traded to the Flames as part of the Matthew Tkachuk mega-deal in 2022. He had a tough season in 2022-23 as he tried to adjust to the Flames’ system, but he really seemed to find his footing in 2023-24 and was one of the Wranglers most consistent and reliable forwards. He even earned some NHL time, dressing for four games with the Flames. He’s not an offensive powerhouse, but he’s a really useful 200-foot player that can be used in any game situation at the AHL level.
Schwindt will become an RFA with arbitration rights upon his deal’s expiry.
The two signings bring the Flames up to 49 contracts against the limit of 50, though if teenagers Zayne Parekh, Matvei Gridin and Etienne Morin are sent back to their junior teams, their deals will slide and no longer count against the 50 deal limit.
The Flames begin the on-ice portion of training camp on Thursday at Winsport.
