In advance of Tuesday night’s match-up with the Minnesota Wild, the Calgary Flames have made a roster move. The club has recalled goaltender Dustin Wolf from the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers. The club has also announced that goaltender Jacob Markstrom is out week-to-week with a fractured finger.
In case you’re new here, the 22-year-old Wolf was the 214th overall selection in the 2019 NHL Draft. Since being selected, he’s been named the Western Hockey League’s top goaltender twice and the American Hockey league’s top goaltender twice. He was also named the AHL’s most valuable player last season. He’s quite good.
Wolf joined the Flames for their recent eastern road swing, dressing as backup to Dan Vladar against Toronto and starting against Ottawa. While Wolf picked up the loss in Ottawa, he made 34 saves in the game and was generally quite sharp. In 13 AHL games this season, he’s gone 10-3-0 with a .920 save percentage and 2.50 goals against average.
Wolf made 43 saves on Sunday in a 7-4 Wranglers win in Henderson.
Markstrom suffered his injury making a save awkwardly with his blocker hand in Monday’s practice.
A minor distinction: the Flames haven’t announced an injury reserve placement for Markstrom (yet) because they had an open roster spot for Wolf. With Wolf’s recall, they’re now at 23 players: three goaltenders (including Markstrom), seven defencemen and 13 forwards.
