Flames call up William Strömgren and Arsenii Sergeev from the AHL’s Wranglers

As the Calgary Flames prepare for a set of back-to-back games against Western Conference opponents, they’ve made a pair of roster moves. The club announced on Friday morning that they’ve recalled forward William Strömgren and goaltender Arsenii Sergeev from the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers.
On Wednesday night against the Edmonton Oilers, forward Brennan Othmann landed awkwardly at the end of a fight with Edmonton’s Ty Emberson early in the first period. Later in the period, netminder Devin Cooley was crashed into by Oilers forward Colton Dach. Cooley got up and finished the period, but when the second period began, Dustin Wolf was in the Flames’ net and Cooley wasn’t even on the Calgary bench.
The Flames ended up losing to Edmonton by a 4-0 score, finishing the game without Othmann or Cooley.
With the Flames facing Seattle at home on Friday night and visiting Colorado on Saturday night, the Flames will likely soldier on with Wolf as their primary goaltender and Sergeev backing him up. Similarly, with Othmann unavailable the Flames are down to 12 healthy forwards, so a call-up was needed to ensure the team had coverage in case of last-minute illness or injury.
Othmann made the Flames’ roster out of training camp and has been in and out of the fourth line, with zero points in six NHL games. Strömgren has impressed with the Wranglers, posting two goals and 10 points in 10 AHL games. Strömgren made his NHL debut last season, dressing for three games with the Flames but not posting any points.
Through seven appearances this season, Cooley is 4-3-0 with a 2.69 goals against average and .914 save percentage. In six appearances, Wolf is 1-4-0 with a 4.81 goals against average and .839 save percentage. Through five games with the Wranglers this season, Sergeev is 3-2-0 with a 3.04 goals against average and .897 save percentage. The 23-year-old Sergeev made his NHL debut last season in the final game of the campaign, picking up a 3-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings.
With these two call-ups, the Flames are technically carrying 24 players on their active roster. NHL rosters are typically capped at 23 players, but there’s an exemption to allow teams to carry an extra goaltender to ensure that they have two healthy goaltenders available for each game – that’s what’s meant by “emergency conditions.”
We’ll have more updates on Othmann and Cooley’s injury statuses as they become available. The Flames are back in action this weekend, hosting Seattle on Friday night before visiting Colorado on Saturday night.
