If there’s one thing the Calgary Flames like to do this season, it’s call up Dennis Gilbert from the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers. If there’s another thing they like to do, it’s send Gilbert back to the Wranglers. After calling Gilbert up for the fifth time on Sunday, they returned him to the AHL on Tuesday.

Gilbert was up for two days and was a healthy scratch for one game in his most recent recall. With Chris Tanev being activated from the injury reserve in time for Monday’s game against the New York Rangers, Gilbert’s presence was no longer needed and so the club sent him back to the AHL. So far this season, he’s spent 26 days on the NHL roster (plus eight days on the injury reserve) and dressed for nine games. His waiver exemption expires after he spends 30 days on the active roster (or dresses in 10 games).

The demotion drops the Flames’ active roster to 22 players, giving them two goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards – a full lineup, plus an extra blueliner and forward for safety’s sake.

The Flames are entirely healthy now, with the exception of non-roster player Oliver Kylington. They have approximately $3.5 million in “today” cap space (cap hits they can add right now and remain compliant) or $5.6 million in trade deadline cap space (cap hits they can add on deadline day and remain compliant).

The Flames return to action on Thursday night when they visit the Detroit Red Wings.
