The Calgary Flames continued their road trip with a trek west to the Bay Area to visit the San Jose Sharks on Monday night. The Flames played some low event hockey and did their level best to drag the Sharks into playing their style of game.
Powered by a pair of fourth line goals, the Flames battled their way to a 2-1 road win over the Sharks.

The rundown

The first period was pretty scrambly, with each team getting some looks. The Flames had a slight edge in possession and quality chances, and they opened the scoring as a result of some smart off-puck play.
Just over 14 minutes into the game, Jonathan Castagna pressured Sharks defender Nolan Allan with a smart forecheck inside the Sharks blueline. Allan attempted a pass but Castagna got his stick on it, leading to Adam Klapka retrieving the errant puck, skating into the slot and firing the puck past Yaroslav Askarov to give the Flames a 1-0 lead.
The second period was more even-keeled, as the Sharks found their rhythm and started to control more and more of the game. The Flames defended fairly well, and Dustin Wolf was superb on a shorthanded scoring chance later in the period and a late Sharks power play that he fended off.
The Sharks were all over the Flames in the first 10 minutes of the third period, but the team did a good job preventing second chances while Wolf did a strong job stopping initial chances.
The fourth line cashed in for their second goal of the game midway through the third. They battled up the ice, with Klapka fending off a defender down low, then throwing the puck to the front of the net. William Stromgren got an initial shot on Askarov, then whacked the rebound out of mid-air to give the Flames a 2-0 lead.
A couple minutes later, the Sharks spoiled Dustin Wolf’s shutout bid. The Sharks got the puck deep and managed to battle in front of Wolf, getting a couple chances after an initial point shot was stopped. Sam Dickinson batted in a loose puck to cut Calgary’s lead to 2-1.
Askarov was pulled for the extra attacker and the Sharks pressed for the equalizer, but they couldn’t muster a second goal and the Flames held on for a 2-1 road win.

Why the Flames won

This was a really nice road effort. The Flames were good early and managed to get some goals in the Sharks net before the home side really found their mojo. Then, they did what they could do disrupt the rush, defend intelligently in their own end, and avoided allowing San Jose’s stars to run roughshod.
The Flames weren’t perfect, but they did a lot of good things in this one.

Red Warrior

It’s joint award time, because we make the rules. Dustin Wolf was superb, so he gets a nod. But we’re also going to recognize the fourth line of Adam Klapka, Jonathan Castagna and William Strömgren, who scored twice and were generally very noticeable.

Turning point

The Sharks had a full two minute power play at the tail-end of the second period, trailing 1-0. The Flames (and Wolf) shut the door, and were able to escape to the second intermission with a lead. A goal for San Jose in that situation would’ve completely tilted things towards the home team.

Flames lineup

The Flames looked like this against San Jose:
Joel Farabee – Mikael Backlund [C] – Matt Coronato
Matvei Gridin – Martin Pospisil – Ryan Strome
Yegor Sharangovich – Morgan Frost – Aydar Suniev
William Stromgren – Jonathan Castagna – Adam Klapka
Kevin Bahl – Simon Nemec
Jake Middleton [A] – Zach Whitecloud [A]
Yan Kuznetsov – Zayne Parekh
Dustin Wolf started in net, backed up by Arsenii Sergeev. The healthy extras were Joel Hanley and Maxim Tsyplakov. Jonathan Huberdeau, Sam Honzek, Devin Cooley and Brennan Othmann missed the game due to injury.

This and that

The Sharks wore their Hometown Remix jerseys in this game, featuring a teal base with black accents and… uh… stylized shark mouths chomping on each player’s arms and legs.
William Stromgren’s third period goal was the first goal and point of his NHL career.
