The Calgary Flames have re-signed forward Adam Klapka to a one-year, two-way contract, the club announced Monday afternoon.
Klapka, 23, led the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers in scoring during both the 2023-24 regular season and the 2024 Calder Cup Playoffs. The 6’8″, 235-pound right wing collected 21 goals and 46 points in 65 games during the regular season before adding two goals and seven points in six playoff contests.
The Flames originally signed Klapka as an undrafted free agent from Liberec Bili Tygri HC in the Czech Extraliga back in 2022. The Prague, Czechia product has appeared in 125 AHL games with the Wranglers over the last two seasons and also skated in his first six NHL games with the Flames in 2023-24.
Klapka’s new two-way contract with the Flames will see him be paid a $775,000 salary for the time he spends in the NHL during the 2024-25 season. The Flames did not specify how much Klapka will earn if he plays with the Wranglers again this year.
Klapka first arrived in North America in 2020, spending parts of two seasons with the USHL’s Tri-City Storm before returning to his native Czechia for the 2021-22 campaign.
After joining the Flames organization in 2022, Klapka collected 13 goals and 25 points in 60 games as a rookie with the Wranglers in the 2022-23 season. He tacked on four goals in nine playoff contests with the Wranglers that spring, tying Jakob Pelletier for the team lead in that category.
In the midst of a standout second season with the Wranglers, Klapka made his NHL debut with the Flames against the Edmonton Oilers on January 20, logging 6:06 over eight shifts under the bright lights at the Scotiabank Saddledome. He never played more than 9:21 in any of his six games with the Flames last season.
Klapka scored his first NHL goal with the Flames in their 2023-24 season finale against the San Jose Sharks on April 18, corralling a loose puck in the offensive zone and firing it past goaltender Devin Cooley (now a member of the Flames organization) to open the scoring in the first period.
As he enters his third North American professional season, Klapka remains exempt from waivers and could be sent back to the Wranglers during training camp this fall without the risk of any other team being able to claim him.
