As the free agent frenzy continues, the Calgary Flames are doing some tidying up by signing Yegor Sharangovich to a 5-year extension worth $5.75 million.

The 2024-25 campaign is the final year of a $3.1 million AAV deal that Sharangovich signed before last season, so his new deal will start in 2025-26 and run through the 2029-30 season.

Last season was a breakout year for the Belarusian forward. In 2022-23, Sharangovich became a spare part for New Jersey after they added Timo Meier at the 2023 trade deadline and he was a “buy low” bet for the Flames’ pro scouting staff. Landing in Calgary (along with a third-round pick) in exchange for Tyler Toffoli, Sharangovich bounced back from some early learning pains to emerge as arguably the club’s biggest breakout story of the 2023-24 season.

Originally slotted as a fourth-line winger during the Flames’ early tumult, he found a really nice role as a top nine winger, playing both sides, and finding a few really effective combinations playing with a combination of Andrei Kuzmenko, Elias Lindholm, Andrew Mangiapane and Jonathan Huberdeau. When he didn’t need to play up the middle, he generated even strength offence with basically everybody. He scored 31 goals and 59 points over 82 games.

Sharangovich was drafted by the Devils in the fifth round, 141st overall in all 82 games played. The 26-year-old was a key part of the Flames power play, using his shot on the left and right side to create open passing lanes, and a sneaky-good piece on their penalty kill, and Flames head coach Ryan Huska as well as general manager Craig Conroy are hoping he can be a key piece of the puzzle moving forward.

Coming out of the 2023-24 season, Sharangovich was one of three prominent wingers that looked to become free agents in the 2025 off-season, along with Mangiapane and Kuzmenko. Sharangovich has a new contract, Mangiapane has a new address, and we’ll see what the future holds for Kuzmenko.
