Flames roster news: seven players re-assigned from prospects training camp

Following Monday’s NextGen Showcase and Tuesday’s practice, the Calgary Flames have begun reducing their training camp group, assigning seven players back to their major junior clubs.

The try-outs have been ended for forwards Riley Boychuk (Prince Albert, WHL) and Brett Olson (Vancouver, WHL).

Meanwhile, five Flames prospects have been returned to their junior teams: defencemen Mace’o Phillips (Medicine Hat, WHL), Jakob Leander (Calgary, WHL) and Bode Laylin (Everett, WHL), and forwards Joe Iginla (Vancouver, WHL) and Simon Katolicky (Sarnia, OHL).

All five Flames prospects are recent draft choices from the past two years:

Phillips was selected in the third round, 80th overall, in the 2025 draft.
Leander was selected in the seventh round, 208th overall, in the 2025 draft.
Iginla was selected in the third round, 65th overall, in the 2026 draft.
Katolicky was selected in the fifth round, 132nd overall, in the 2026 draft.
Laylin was selected in the sixth round, 164th overall, in the 2026 draft.

The roster moves allows each of these prospects a chance to start their junior seasons on time this coming weekend. Leander (with Calgary against Red Deer) and Phillips (with Medicine Hat against Lethbridge) are expected to make their WHL debuts on Friday night, while Laylin (with Everett against Portland) will do the same on Saturday night. Iginla’s third WHL season begins on Saturday when Vancouver faces Kelowna. Katolicky makes his OHL debut on Saturday when Sarnia faces Sault Ste. Marie.

Here are the 17 players carrying over from Prospects Training Camp to main camp:

Goaltenders (4): Semyon Konopsky, Owen Say, Arsenii Sergeev and Kirill Zarubin
Defencemen (4): Kent Anderson, Axel Hurtig, Kyle Walker and Abram Wiebe
Forwards (9): Andrew Basha, Ryder Boulton, Jonathan Castagna, Will Dineen, Matvei Gridin, Tyson Gross, Chase Harrington, Aydar Suniev and Carter Wilkie

For the curious, Harrington is the only carry-over player that’s not under a pro contract with the Flames or Wranglers for the 2026-27 season. He was a second round pick by the Flames in June’s draft.

Main camp begins for the Flames later this week.
