Flames roster news: 7 sent to Wranglers, 8 on waivers and Harrington back to junior, roster down to 27

In the aftermath of Thursday’s pre-season game in Seattle, the Calgary Flames have made major cuts to their training camp roster. Seven players have been sent outright to the American Hockey League’s Calgary Wranglers, eight have been placed on waivers for the purposes of going to the Wranglers if/when they clear, and one player has been assigned back to junior.

Here’s the rundown:

Six players on entry-level NHL deals, all exempt from waivers this season, are headed to the Wranglers: goalie Arsenii Sergeev, defencemen Hunter Brzustewicz and Axel Hurtig, and forwards Andrew Basha, Jonathan Castagna and Tyson Gross.
One player on an AHL deal, with waivers not applicable, is headed to the Wranglers: forward Will Dineen.
Eight players on NHL deals, all who require waivers, are headed to the waiver wire (and then the Wranglers if they clear): defencemen Mike Benning, Andreas Englund and Jake Livingstone, and forwards Dryden Hunt, Ben Jones, Rory Kerins, Sam Morton and William Stromgren.
One unsigned draft pick is headed to junior: forward Chase Harrington, assigned to the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs.

We’ve discussed Brzustewicz’s situation: he’s good, and probably good enough to be in the NHL, but he’s a victim of the numbers game right now. We saw some good performances in pre-season from the eight players hitting waivers, but not quite enough for any of them to force management’s hand and make a spot for them on the big club.

Here are the 27 players left in camp:

Goaltenders Dustin Wolf, Devin Cooley and Kirill Zarubin
Defencemen Kevin Bahl, Simon Nemec, Jake Middleton, Zayne Parekh, Yan Kuznetsov, Zach Whitecloud, Joel Hanley and Brayden Pachal
Forwards Matvei Gridin, Morgan Frost, Matt Coronato, Sam Honzek, Mikael Backlund, Joel Farabee, Connor Zary, Ryan Strome, Yegor Sharangovich, Maxim Tsyplakov, Martin Pospisil, Adam Klapka, Brennan Othmann, Aydar Suniev, Alex Nylander and Jonathan Huberdeau

Zarubin remains on the NHL roster to back up Wolf in the pre-season finale on Saturday, as Cooley has already played twice. Aside from Zarubin, interesting names remaining include Nylander (on a PTO), Othmann (who requires waivers) and Suniev (who does not). Huberdeau will be starting the season on the injury reserve list, so there are three other moves to bring the roster down to the season-opening 23 players: Zarubin to the AHL, and then two other forward cuts.

The Flames have to file a cap compliant 23-man roster with the league’s Central Registry by 3 p.m. MT on Monday.
