The Calgary Flames will be looking to build on a steady performance in their four-game qualifying series victory over the Winnipeg Jets when they kick off their first-round playoff clash with the Dallas Stars on Tuesday as a small -105 underdog on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.
Calgary largely dominated in its win over Winnipeg, outscoring the Jets by a wide 16-6 margin in the series, and has now posted wins in six of eight overall contests going into Tuesday’s series opener at Rogers Place.
Flames vs Stars | OddsShark Matchup Report
The Flames’ qualifying series win marked a big step in the right direction as the club seeks to rewrite a dismal playoff narrative. Prior to their victory over the Jets the Flames had posted just one series win in seven playoff appearances since 2004, and scored an average of just 2.07 goals per game while going 2-12 over their three previous first-round appearances.
However, the Flames received offensive contributions from up and down the lineup against Winnipeg. Sean Monahan led the way with two goals and four assists, with role players like Milan Lucic and Andrew Mangiapane contributing with three helpers each. The team also received a huge lift from goaltender Cam Talbot, who stopped 104 of the 110 shots he faced in the series, capped by a stellar 31-save performance in a series-clinching 4-0 victory.
Despite making major strides, the Flames have yet to make major gains at the sportsbooks. With just two wins in their past nine meetings with the Stars, Calgary continues to lag behind Dallas on the NHL playoff series prices as even-money underdogs at online betting sites.
While the Flames enter the first round with renewed hope, the Stars are still looking to find their groove after a disappointing performance in the Western Conference round robin.
Losers in each of their final six regular season contests, the Stars carried their struggles into the round robin. Dallas fell flat in losses to Vegas and Colorado before eking out a narrow 2-1 win over the St. Louis Blues to clinch the No. 3 seed in the West. Overall, the Stars scored just five total goals during the round robin, and have averaged just 1.86 goals per game during their current 1-6-2 overall run.
And while the Stars have claimed the series win in three of their past four first-round appearances and have largely dominated Calgary of late, they have mustered two or fewer goals in 10 of their last 14 meetings with Calgary since December 2015.
