Recap: Wranglers can’t figure out Ty Young in pre-season shutout loss

The Calgary Wranglers are playing a pre-season series for the first time in team history and kicked it off on Sunday night for a meeting against the Abbotsford Canucks. Both sides were excited for some game action and the pace of play reflected that. The Canucks scored the first two goals of the game in the first period and Arsenii Sergeev was able to hold them at last for the majority of the game. Unfortunately, the Wranglers couldn’t get any past Abbotsford’s netminder and were shut out 3-0.

Game at a glance

Arsenii Sergeev got the start for the Wranglers’ first pre-season game of the year. At the other end, Ty Young was in net for the Canucks. The Wranglers came out with a lot of jump and managed to get a power play chance just 39 seconds into the game. This power play was full of crisp and quick passes that almost earned them their first goal of the game off this shot from Hunter Brzustewicz.

After they returned to even strength, Calgary had another shot on the power play with a delayed tripping call against Abbotsford that the Wranglers managed to stretch out for nearly an extra minute. On their second power play, William Stromgren had a few looks then shortly after their power play came to a close, Carter Wilkie was called for high-sticking at 9:11.

About halfway through the power play, Ryan St. Louis scored off a rebound for a power play goal to put Abbotsford up 1-0. The Wranglers didn’t let their pace waver after this goal and Ben Jones was the next Wrangler to nearly find the back of the net. At 16:42, the second goal of the game came for the Canucks when Trey Fix-Wolansky got out to a partial breakaway and scored on Sergeev.

The Wranglers kept the offensive zone pressure on the Canucks but could not find a goal to split the lead. At the end of the first period, Calgary was ahead 16-10 in shots but down 2-0 in goals. In the second period, the Wranglers continued to push for their first goal of the game and Ty Young continued to turn them away.

At 5:19, Hunter Brzustewicz drew his second penalty of the game and the Canucks were sent to the box for slashing. Calgary had another good look on the power play with Rory Kerins getting a couple of chances and Sam Morton getting involved in the scrum that showed some of the first signs of physicality between these teams.

Ben Jones was the next player to get sent to the box when he was called for hooking at 9:49. The Wranglers killed off this penalty and play continued at even strength. At 16:56, Ty Young went off for the delayed penalty call against Alex Nylander for hooking. With just under three minutes to go in the second period, the Wranglers were penalty killing again. Sergeev was the star of this penalty kill, especially with a couple of kick saves to keep the Canucks off the board in the second.

Standouts

Rory Kerins was the best Wrangler on the ice in this game and led the team in shot attempts with six. He, Ben Jones and Jake Livingstone wore the As in this game as the Wranglers currently sit without a captain. Kerins was hungry for a goal and all over the crease whenever he could be.

Alex Nylander and Ben Jones also had their fair share of chances and were looking to be the guy to break it open for Calgary. Sam Morton was also another skater who could have been that goalscorer in the first half of the game. On the back end, Mike Benning and Hunter Brzustewicz stood out with both of their two-way games and abilities to protect the puck. They had room to set things up and Brzustewicz was quarterbacking the power play in this game.

Next up

A great effort but regardless of the result, it doesn’t count for anything other than pride and getting your reps in. The pre-season is an even quicker one in the AHL as this two game series wraps up on Monday at 2:00 p.m. MT. The next game after that will kick off the regular season.
