The Calgary Wranglers wrapped up their weekend series against the Canucks in an afternoon game on Sunday. They kept things close as they usually do with this rival to the west and looked to be stronger through 60 minutes to get and hold the lead for this game. They were once again leading going into the third period, then fighting a tie for the majority of the frame. The Canucks ended up scoring the go-ahead goal with 2:32 to go in regulation and an empty netter to seal it. Calgary fell 4-2.
Lineup notes
The team made a couple of announcements prior to puck drop. They announced their injury report, which still only had Connor Zary listed. Andrew Basha was able to play after a bad looking hit in the game prior. They also announced that they have released Derek Forbort from his PTO. Forbort didn’t dress for any games and didn’t skate as an extra in any of the warmups. For this game, they gave newly called-up Rush player Alex Campbell the start on the third line and Nikitia Pavlychev was taken out to make space.

Game at a glance
The Wranglers swapped back to Kirill Zarubin for this game and the Canucks kept Nikita Tolopilo in net for the second consecutive night. There was a lot of pace to start the game and at 3:18, Abbotsford was called for delay of game to give Calgary their first power play of the game. They weren’t able to generate much on this first one but by around the 13 minute mark of the period, Dryden Hunt had a run of two to three high danger chances that could’ve easily opened the scoring.
The Canucks ended up on top of the Wranglers in shots after the first 20 minutes, leading 8-5 in the scoreless game. It only stayed scoreless for the first few seconds of the second period, then Alex Nylander sprung himself on the rush 18 seconds in and scored the game’s opening goal. Abram Wiebe picked up the lone assist.
By 1:01, the Canucks were on the board too off a goal from Jacob Quillan. The home team tried a tic tac toe play that was partially broken up but Quillan was still able to finish off the play with a goal. From here, some physicality showed itself. Especially from Kole Lind. He was trying to instigate with a few Wranglers such as Alex Gallant, Rory Kerins and Dryden Hunt.
At 5:10, the Wranglers were penalty killing with Carter Wilkie in the box for holding, then after this call, Sam Morton was called for tripping. Calgary killed these off and managed to put another goal on the board from William Stromgren, who went for the snipe from his knees. Dryden Hunt and Mike Benning picked up the assists on this marker.
What a shot from William Stromgren for his second goal and 10th point of the year
The momentum shift to Calgary was short lived as Carter Wilkie was called for hooking at 12:31. The Wranglers killed this off and were on the man advantage with a holding call against the Canucks at 15:54. Again, no shots on goal registered on this power play, and that pretty well wrapped up the period. Calgary went into the second intermission up 2-1 and trailing 17-11 in shots.
Abbotsford came back in the third period in Saturday’s game and that was the story in this game too. Just 1:50 into the period, Trey Fix-Wolansky scored the equalizing goal for the Canucks. He received a long range pass and got around Axel Hurtig to get a shot off that beat Zarubin.
The Wranglers were trying not to repeat their mistakes of last game and many skaters tried their shots at regaining that lead through the majority of the period. They exchanged chances with their opponents and something gave at 17:28 when Jacob Quillan scored his second of the game to put Abbotsford up 3-2. He was at the bottom of the circle and chipped the puck up through traffic and into the back of the net.
At 18:18, the Wranglers pulled Kirill Zarubin for the extra attacker and Hunt, Stromgren and Kerins all tried their best to get that next goal. At 19:43, however, Quillan buried the puck in the empty net to complete his hat trick performance. In the dying seconds of this game, things were getting physical and Alex Gallant was called for interference and unsportsmanlike conduct with just four seconds to go in the game.
At the final buzzer, a fight erupted on the ice and 10 minutes of penalties were dealt with Will Dineen and Austin Brimmer getting two roughing minors, and Vilmer Alriksson getting a cross-checking minor. The final score was 4-2 Canucks and Calgary was out-shot 25-21. The Wranglers wrapped up their road trip with a 2-4-0-0 record and go to 5-5-0-0 on the season.
Scoring stat summary
