Alex Gallant is a well-known enforcer for the Calgary Wranglers with over 12 years of professional hockey experience. Gallant is the longest standing member of the Flames’ AHL affiliation with game experience dating back to the 2019-20 season with the Stockton Heat. He came along for the ride for the relocation and creation of the Calgary Wranglers and has served as an alternate captain for the last four seasons.

What were the expectations for Alex Gallant in 2025-26?

Gallant entered last season as a 32 year old and knows at this point in his career, his role isn’t to battle the prospects for playing time. Gallant has served as a protector role and with the types of fights he gets involved in, there are usually suspensions and missed time along the way. Gallant hasn’t played more than 50 games in a single season since the 2021-22 season with the Heat and was expected to be between that 40-45 game range this season.
Alex Gallant is also not a player expected to score. He makes space for his teammates and serves as an on-ice and off-ice leadership presence to help his teammates develop. Gallant has given a few of his prior teammates some fighting pointers from time to time and has a whole art that goes into how he plans his fights and studies his opponents. He was expected to serve the same role he has in the past and be the guy willing to give and take a few punches when games were getting out of hand. In 2024-25, Gallant had three assists in 39 games with the Wranglers and 112 PIMs.

How did Alex Gallant perform in 2025-26?

Alex Gallant stuck to his guns this year (pun not intended), and performed very similarly to his last couple of seasons in Calgary. Gallant’s PIMs last year were the second highest of his career with 179. It still wasn’t the highest in the AHL either with Ian McKinnon of the Coachella Valley Firebirds putting up 245 and former Wrangler Connor Mylymok putting up 204. Gallant finished fifth in the league in PIMs in the 2025-26 regular season. He played in three more games than last season with 42 appearances. His point production finished the same with three assists. He did have a goal on the season but after it was reviewed by AHL staff, it was given to Carter Wilkie instead.
Wilkie was a common linemate for Gallant as well as David Silye, Parker Bell and Lucas Ciona. The fourth line was known to be the Wranglers toughest checking line and got their share of physical action over the course of the season. So far, Carter Wilkie is confirmed as a returning player for the Wranglers and will likely continue to work with Gallant. Newcomer Ryder Boulton is also excited to work with Gallant to up the ante on his physical game.

What’s the future outlook for Alex Gallant?

Gallant, now 33, is starting to get into that age range where you wonder if he might be thinking of hanging it up. At Wranglers exit interviews in the spring, he made it apparent he still has gas in the tank and his summer will be spent preparing for next season.
“Just got home this summer, back east and enjoy the summer. Get ready to go for next year. I feel great. My body feels great and I really want to play again. So go home and get ready and try to do that again.”
Alex Gallant is one of the only veteran alternate captains returning for the 2026-27 season and was signed to an AHL deal early into the off-season. His expectations on the mentorship side of things may increase without Martin Frk and Clark Bishop around, but his on-ice role should continue to be the same. Gallant should play about a half season’s worth of games again, granted he is healthy and will be optioned in and out of the fourth line. In my lineup prediction for the fall, I don’t have Gallant cracking the opening lineup but he is their only extra forward as it stands contract-wise. I predict a few more AHL contract adds later in the summer or into the fall to fill out some depth on both sides of the wing and to have call-up options from Rapid City.
The days of Alex Gallant’s viral fights are not quite over and surely there will be more to look out for in the upcoming season with the Calgary Wranglers.
