The Calgary Wranglers and Colorado Eagles faced off for the first time this season in Loveland, CO on Friday. Calgary was ready to go from the hop and controlled the opening minutes of the game. They were rewarded early with a deflection goal from Carter Wilkie just 2:37 into the game. The Eagles got one back in the second period then Rory Kerins scored early in the third period on the power play. Kerins’ goal went on to be the game winner and the Wranglers picked up a 2-1 win.
Lineup notes
Arsenii Sergeev was assigned back to the Wranglers prior to this game and made it for the road trip to Colorado. The roster move just took place on Thursday and with the travel associated with this trip, the Wranglers didn’t send Owen Say back to Rapid City just yet. Say ended up getting the start for his first game as a Wrangler this season and Sergeev backed him up. Both the Wranglers and Eagles went 11 forwards and seven defencemen in their last game but just Colorado stuck to that lineup for this game.

Game at a glance
Owen Say was matched up against Ilya Nabokov in net for this game and Say didn’t have a lot of work to do in the opening minutes. The Wranglers controlled the opening minutes of the game and the second Calgary shot came off the stick of Hunter Brzustewicz. Brzustewicz appeared to score on this but it was actually announced as Sam Morton then corrected to Carter Wilkie as the player who got the last touch on the puck in front of the net.
This goal came at 2:37 and was also assisted by Nikita Pavlychev. The Wranglers had an early chance to keep their momentum going on the power play. Four chances actually. Nearly back to back. Cooper Gay was called for holding at 5:28, then Yanick Turcotte served a too many men call at 7:54, then Gustav Stjernberg was called for interference at 10:33 and finally Adam Beckman was called for tripping at 12:17 for a 16 second five on three for the visiting Wranglers. The Eagles did get a shot off by this point that was actually a shorthanded breakaway that Say turned away.
The Wranglers took their first penalty of the game at 15:20, when Alex Nylander was called for hooking. Carter Wilkie tried to take it the other way with a shorthanded breakaway that was shut down. The Eagles had their best stretch of chances in the dying seconds of the frame but Say managed to keep them off the board. The Wranglers led the Eagles 1-0 in goals and 7-2 in shots.
The Eagles had the better jump to start the second period and Owen Say started seeing stretches of shots he continued to turn away. The game was in a bit of a lull so Alex Gallant and Yanick Turcotte took the opportunity to get their teams going with a fight at 5:15.

At 7:57, Ben Jones was called for holding and 19 seconds into the Eagles power play, Adam Beckman scored the equalizing goal for the Eagles. He was set up for a one timer from the slot and ripped it past Say. The Wranglers had push back after this goal but were back to the box at 16:41, when Alex Nylander was called for holding the stick. Right after this penalty expired, the Eagles took another too many men bench minor and this carried into the third period. At the end of two periods, it was a 1-1 game, and shots were 11-10 for the Wranglers.
Calgary had just under a minute of power play time remaining to start the third period and they managed to capitalize. Hunter Brzustewicz took another shot from the point and Rory Kerins was able to bury the rebound. Dryden Hunt initially picked up the secondary assist on this goal at the 48 second mark of the third but it was changed to Alex Nylander for the primary assist.

At 1:30, off-setting penalties were called against Taylor Makar and Brayden Pachal for roughing. Then after these expired, the Eagles were back in the box for cross-checking. Colorado had some shorthanded looks on this penalty then Jake Livingstone was called for interference at 6:10. The Wranglers got their legs back after this penalty kill and had a run of a few shots around the midway mark of the period.
At 11:09, Alex Nylander was called for tripping then this penalty was followed up with a high-sticking call against Will Dineen. It was all Eagles for the rest of the period and at 17:48, Ilya Nabokov was pulled for the extra attacker. He came back briefly in the last minute of the game and was back off at 19:24. In the last four seconds of the game, Tyson Gross was called for delay of game and the Eagles had a very brief six on four the Wranglers shut down in the last second to win 2-1.
