The Calgary Wranglers returned home after a six game road trip to host the Laval Rocket for their first meeting of the 2026-27 season. The Rocket had quite a shot advantage in the first period but it was the Wranglers who would get on the board first with a goal from Mike Benning. William Stromgren added another goal in the second period then in the third, Laval got two back to even up the game. Alex Nylander scored the go-ahead goal for Calgary late in the third then Ben Jones hit the empty net to secure the game. The Wranglers snapped their three game losing streak and won 4-2.
Lineup notes
Connor Zary remains out of the lineup and Ben Jones made his return to the Wranglers for this game. The lineup went through a little bit of a shuffle but no call-up’s happened prior to this game so it was still the same core. There may be a couple of call-up’s happening on Friday morning for the Flames game against the Kraken. Devin Cooley is expected to be out and possibly Brennan Othmann as well, who didn’t return to the game against the Oilers on Wednesday. This group might be down a couple of core guys by the second half of this series.

Game at a glance
The Wranglers changed things up a little for the starting lineup to give Will Dineen the start against his former team. He was out with Sam Morton and Tyson Gross’ line, then they shifted back to the announced lines after the fact. Arsenii Sergeev was matched up against Kaapo Kahkonen in net. In the first half of the period, the netminders were getting tested pretty equally and stoppages were pretty rare.
In the second half of the period, the Rocket pulled ahead in shots and Arsenii Sergeev was solid in net to keep them off the board. The first penalty of the game was called against Luke Philp at 16:56 for tripping. Laval had a few more chances on this man advantage but no goals. In the dying seconds of the period, Dryden Hunt absorbed a hit, then Rory Kerins and Mike Benning were able to spring up on the rush and Benning finished off the play with an elevated backhand over Kahkonen.
This goal came at 19:51 and Kerins and Hunt both picked up the assists. At the end of the first period, the Wranglers were up 1-0 despite being outshot 21-8 in the opening frame. The Rocket came out with the most zone pressure to start the second then the Wranglers got their first power play of the game when Laval was called for holding.
Calgary had a couple of chances that were fanned on but they did get another chance on the power play right after this one expired due to a delay of game call against the visitors. Early in this second power play, the top unit was able to reset and once again, Dryden Hunt and Rory Kerins set up the next goal. This time it was off the stick of William Stromgren with a shot that snuck through. This goal came at 10:33.

The Wranglers got another power play a couple of minutes after this goal after a hooking call against Filip Mesar. The Wranglers had a stretch of chances but couldn’t find that next goal on the man advantage. At the end of the second period, Calgary was up 2-0 but were being outshot 26-18.
Calgary was looking for more to start the third period but ended up taking a penalty at 4:13 for holding. Rory Kerins was the guilty skater and at 5:11, Luke Mittelstadt scored the first Laval goal of the game off a partially screened shot over the shoulder of Sergeev. The Rocket put a lot of pressure on Calgary to get that equalizing goal and found it at 14:58 with a goal from Xavier Simoneau. He got a backhand shot off deep in the zone and elevated over Sergeev.
Brayden Pachal put up a big hit on Dillan Bentley on this play and Bentley was on the ice needing attention for a few minutes. Bentley had the set-up pass and Pachal hit him along the boards behind the net. The Rocket were frustrated by this but the close nature of the game couldn’t risk a fight. However, this might be something Pachal might have to answer for in Saturday’s game.
1:04 later, the Wranglers were able to pull ahead once more with a goal from Alex Nylander. It was a bit of a broken play, but Nylander was able to finish it off on the rebound. Luke Philp and Ben Jones picked up the assists.

At 18:11, the Rocket pulled Kahkonen for the extra attacker and Ben Jones scored Calgary’s fourth of the game on the empty net.

The Rocket put Kahkonen back in, then at 19:19, Vincent Arseneau was called for goaltender interference then William Stromgren and Braden Hache were called for misconduct at 19:51. The Wranglers ran out the time from there and secured a 4-2 win. Shots finished 38-28 for Laval and the three stars all went to Calgary. Rory Kerins with the third with two assists, Arsenii Sergeev with a 36 save game for the second and Alex Nylander for the first star for the game winning goal.
