Calgary Wranglers name Trent Cull as their new head coach

The Calgary Wranglers have their new bench boss. The club announced the hiring of Trent Cull as their new head coach on Monday afternoon.
The 49-year-old Cull joins the Flames organization with a pretty long resume as both a coach and player. He’s been behind the bench fairly continuously since 2004, primarily in the American Hockey League:
  • He was an assistant coach in Vancouver for much of 2022-23, before he and head coach Bruce Boudreau were removed in January.
  • He was head coach for the Canucks’ AHL affiliate between 2017-22, first with the Utica Comets (2017-21) and then with the Abbotsford Canucks (2021-22).
  • He was an assistant coach with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch for eight seasons (2006-10 and 2013-17). The first four seasons was while Syracuse was Columbus’ AHL club, the last four were while it was Tampa Bay’s top affiliate.
  • He was head coach for the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves from 2010-13.
  • He was assistant coach for the OHL’s Guelph Storm from 2004-06.
A defenceman, Cull played in the Ontario Hockey League for Owen Sound, Windsor and Peterborough. He played 10 seasons in minor pro in the AHL and International Hockey League, with stops in St. John’s, Houston, Springfield, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Syracuse. He won the IHL’s Turner Cup twice as a player.
The Wranglers’ coaching staff for 2023-24 will be comprised of Cull, assistant coaches Joe Cirella and Don Nachbaur, video coach Daniel Johnston and goaltending development coach MacKenzie Skapski.
