If you were looking for bad news about the Calgary Wranglers winning streak, you’re not going to find it here. The Wranglers winning streak is alive and well after their 4-3 game on Tuesday night against the Anaheim Ducks’ affiliate, the San Diego Gulls.
It wasn’t a perfect win and they worked from behind again for the fourth straight game, but they did enough as a team to find a way to be victorious.

Lineup notes

The Wranglers coaching staff made a couple of changes to the lines for this game. Jonathan Aspirot rejoined the lineup on a pairing with Ilya Solovyov and Ilya Nikolaev came back this game in place of David Silye centring the fourth line. Here’s how the lines looked in this game.
Jakob Pelletier – Rory Kerins – Martin Frk
Dryden Hunt – Sam Morton – Matt Coronato
William Stromgren – Clark Bishop – Walker Duehr
Lucas Ciona – Ilya Nikolaev – Parker Bell
Hunter Brzustewicz – Yan Kuznetsov
Jonathan Aspirot – Ilya Solovyov
Jeremie Poirier – Artem Grushnikov
Devin Cooley

Game at a glance

The Oscar Dansk reunion will have to wait another night as it was Calle Clang who started in net for the Gulls. Devin Cooley started on the Wranglers side and he was putting in the work to start the game. The Wranglers didn’t seem to be up to the same level of energy as the Gulls and were caught on their heels for the first half of the period. Devin Cooley kept things scoreless as long as he could stopping at least two or three grade-A scoring chances.
Ilya Solovyov was doing his part from the blue line but paid the price up high when a Gulls player hit him with a high stick. He was gripping at his face and then went down the tunnel to get looked at. It appeared the Wranglers would be dealing with just rotating five defensemen but Soloyvov got stitched up and didn’t even miss a shift.
Cooley could only hold on so long at his end then something gave when San Diego netted their first of the night at 9:45 when Tyson Hinds walked into a shot that ripped past the Wranglers netminder. Jansen Harkins and Pavol Regenda assisted on the opening tally for the visiting team.
This served as a little bit of a wake up call for Calgary as they scored less than two minutes later. Sam Morton made a smart move behind the net to rattle the opposing goaltender a little bit and set up Matt Coronato for a shart-angled snipe. Dryden Hunt also picked up a helper on this play.
The efforts were evening up towards the end of the period and Ilya Solovyov was tagged for the first penalty of the game in the last two minutes of the period. The first ended with an evened up 1-1 game and shots favouring the Gulls 19-6.
In the second period, the Gulls seemed to be the team with more jump again and the Wranglers were giving them way too much time and space. San Diego had about three breakaway chances in the opening minutes of the frame and scored on one at 5:03 from Sam Colangelo.
In a similar way to the last goal, the Wranglers tightened up and put forth a stronger effort to get back into this game. Ilya Solovyov rocking the stitched lip and black eye ripped a shot from the point off the faceoff win at 7:52 and made it an even 2-2 game. Both assists on this goal went to guys that came back into the lineup for this game. Jonathan Aspirot and Ilya Nikolaev.
The Wranglers would get their first go-ahead goal of the night about three minutes later when Matt Coronato scored his second goal of the night. He got to the puck right in front of Clang’s glove and managed to sneak it under his trapper and across the goal line. Dryden Hunt had the lone assist on this marker.
After this, a long string of penalties plagued both sides of the ice. A total of 12 minutes of penalties were dealt in the middle frame with the Wranglers having to kill off a five on three later in the period. They were able to do so and despite the penalty minutes, neither team scored on the man-advantage.
At the end of the second period, the Wranglers were up 3-2 but were again outshot in the period 12-9. Calgary did a good job holding their lead in the third period and had a bit of a scary moment with Matt Coronato at 4:31. He was taken down and slid skates first into the end boards. He was attended to for a few minutes and appeared shaken up and in pain. Thankfully, he was able to stay on the bench and even wanted to stay on the ice if the coaches didn’t pull him off.
This play put the Wranglers on a five on three but they were only able to register one formal shot on goal during this opportunity to add some insurance to their lead. They lost their lead at 10:32 when Jan Mysak jammed the puck deep in the zone and evened up the score with his first goal of the season.
The pace picked up on the ice and the desperation for the next goal was felt throughout the building. If you’ve been following along with the last couple of games, Clark Bishop has been the guy to score the game-winner in the last two tight games and he made it three straight in this game on Tuesday night.
He drove the zone and faked like he was going to pass and no look shot on Calle Clang and scored. William Stromgren and Ilya Solovyov assisted on this goal that would end up being the game-winner.
Bishop mentioned after the game there was a bit of superstition about his latest game-winners but he was happy it paid off again in this game. After this big moment, the Gulls pulled Clang at 18:43 and offsetting penalties were dealt at 19:19. From there, the time ran down and the Wranglers secured win number eight in a row.
The final score in this match-up was 4-3 and shots finished 45-25 favouring the Gulls. The Wranglers were almost doubled up in shots but still managed to pick up the win. Another outstanding night for Devin Cooley, stopping 42 out of 45 shots.
For the three star selections at the end of the game, Dryden Hunt was awarded the third star, Clark Bishop was awarded the second and Matt Coronato was awarded the first. The overall feeling after the game was the start was not good enough and they didn’t deserve to win that game but still finding a way to win was the best possible outcome.
