The Calgary Wranglers returned to the Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday night for their first themed game of the season. It was outlaw night as the Wranglers sported their version of the Blasty jerseys this weekend. This helped them dig deep for a full come from behind victory.
The Wranglers beat the Eagles 3-2 and extended their winning streak to six straight.
Lineup notes
The Flames announced earlier in the day that Matt Coronato was assigned to the Calgary Wranglers. However, he was not in the lineup for this game. Instead, one change that was seen in time for Friday’s game was the return of Ilya Solovyov after he missed all four road games the last week and a half. He took the place of Jonathan Aspirot and the Wranglers maintained the traditional 12 forwards and six defencemen lineup.
Sandra Prusina mentioned on the broadcast that the reason for Solovyov’s absence on the road trip was due to immigration issues and did not end up being the result of an injury as suspected before.
Game at a glance
Calgary made a goaltending switch in this game, giving Waltteri Ignatjew his second start of the season and his first start in front of a home crowd. On the Eagles side, Kaapo Kahkonen made his first AHL start since the 2019-20 season in this conditioning assignment.
It only took a handful of minutes for someone to light the lamp in this game. Matthew Phillips made a backhand pass behind the net and set up Nikita Prishchepov on the doorstep for the first goal of the night. This opening goal took place at 5:03.
A couple of minutes later, the Wranglers fell even more behind by giving up a power play goal to Oskar Olausson at 8:58. After this marker, Calgary got their first media timeout and took the time to thank Matthew Phillips and welcome him back to his former home. Phillips was all smiles as the team honoured him.
By the end of the first period, the Wranglers were down 2-0 and behind 13-8 in shots. In the second, Yan Kuznetsov found the first Calgary goal of the evening. He ripped a shot from the point and it happened to deflect off an Eagles skate and in. Lucas Ciona and David Silye picked up the assists on this marker. This point was the first pro point Silye registered in the league.
After this goal, the Wranglers had the majority of the chances for the rest of the period but were unable to even things up. The middle frame had no penalties for either side and once they reached 40 minutes of play, the score was 2-1 for the Colorado Avalanche affiliate. Calgary outshot their opponents 15-8 through the second period.
In the third period, Calgary did not stop trying to get themselves back into this game. Jakob Pelletier was able to get a perfect set up for Rory Kerins and Kerins finished it at 5:53. Dryden Hunt also picked up an assist on this equalizing goal.
tic-tac-toe to tie it up!!! 2-2!
With things back to even on the scoreboard, the Wranglers finally weren’t chasing a lead from behind. Each team pushed for chances for the next goal, but it would be Calgary that pulled ahead. Clark Bishop scored at 14:28 when Jeremie Poirier faked the shot and opted for a pass in front instead.
😮💨 That fake!!
David Silye picked up his second assist of the night on this marker and Jeremie Poirier picked up the secondary helper. Colorado pulled Kahkonen at 17:53 and the remaining shots of the game only came from the visiting end. They battled until the last second but it would be Calgary who picked up the 3-2 win. Shots finished nearly even with Calgary leading 33-32.
Former Wrangler, Matthew Phillips was awarded the third star of the night, David Silye was awarded the second for his two assist night and Clark Bishop got the first star with his game-winning goal.
