The Calgary Wranglers were out for revenge on Wednesday night after losing their winning streak the previous night to none other than the Edmonton Oilers AHL squad. They moved on quickly from the events of Tuesday night and tried to pull ahead in the season series in this game. They chipped away at a lead they developed in the first period and finished off with a 4-0 win over the Bakersfield Condors.

Game at a glance
Devin Cooley was back between the pipes for Calgary and Bakersfield opted to start Collin Delia instead of Olivier Rodrigue, who picked up the win the night before. The second and third lines got a bit of a switch up in this game to put Duehr higher in the lineup and bring Klapka down a line.
Calgary had a pretty characteristic start. Which, unfortunately, has been on the slower side this season. Whether that was getting used to line switches or just dealing with the reality of two games in 24 hours. The home team got the first chance on the power play when Matthew Savoie tripped up Jonathan Aspirot at 12:07. They got a few shots on goal in this man advantage but the power play units were looking a little discombobulated.
However, this power play did help the Wranglers gain some more zone time in the second half of the period. As the last minute of the opening frame wound down, William Stromgren fed the puck up to Ilya Solovyov from behind the net and Solovyov scored the opening goal of the game at 19:30. David Silye also assisted on this opening marker.
That score stayed for the remaining 30 seconds of the period and the Wranglers went into the first intermission up 1-0 and doubling up their opponents in shots 12-6. In the second period, the Wranglers had a bit more of a jump. They continued to put up shots with a few chances, but nothing to get the crowd on their feet.
The stoppages in play were pretty minimal too. It wasn’t until 15:35 into the second period that someone made their way to the box. Phil Kemp caught Jeremie Poirier with a high stick and took a seat for two minutes. It was a better showing for Calgary’s power play on that opportunity but still not enough to alter the score.
Late in the period, Sam Honzek was called for boarding and eight seconds of his penalty carried over to the third period. After 40 complete minutes of play, the Wranglers remained up 1-0 and ahead in shots 27-11.
The opening minutes of the third had the Wranglers on a power play that was cut short by a goaltender interference call against Adam Klapka. It was not a very agreeable call due to the positioning of Delia, but still landed Klapka in the box. 30 seconds after the Klapka call, the Wranglers were up to a four on three.
This generated a bit of opportunity for the Wranglers and once all the penalties were served, Adam Klapka scored the second goal of the night at 4:23. Clark Bishop and Jarred Tinordi successfully broke up a play in the Wranglers zone that ended with a breakaway goal from Klapka. His celebration drew a crowd of angry players behind the net from both sides.
A good goal but a grumpy celebration. Adam Klapka makes it 2-0 Wranglers.
Exactly four minutes later, William Stromgren made some room for himself and got the puck up to Walker Duehr for the third goal of the evening for the home squad. Yan Kuznetsov picked up the secondary assist on this lamplighter.
Slick moves from Stromgren to Duehr for Calgary's third goal of the night.
The healthy lead allowed the Wranglers to sit back a bit and refocus on protecting Cooley’s shutout. The Condors tried to make some moved in the last few minutes pulled Delia at 16:30. They further benefitted from this scenario when Jeremie Poirier was called for holding 10 seconds later. They opted for a timeout to strategize but whatever play they drew up, did not result in a goal for the visitors.
Jakob Pelletier got possession in the last 1:13 of regulation and scored on the empty net to make it 4-0 Wranglers. This was his first goal of the season and was assisted by Jeremie Poirier. The team succeeded in protecting the shutout and the final score finished up at 4-0.
After this performance, Devin Cooley sits at fifth in the league for GAA with 1.54, first in the league for wins, second in the league in save percentage with 0.953 and tied for first in shutouts with two. After another outstanding performance, Cooley spoke about the mentality in shutout games. He said,
“Sometimes you think about it, but the mind likes to lie to you and the mind likes to wander sometimes so I think that’s normal. Everytime it starts to wander I’m like oh shutout or oh what am I going to say in the interviews. I just gotta be like shut up, stop talking. Don’t think about it, just one shot at a time.”
Cooley also mentioned he’s got to keep up with his former goaltending partner Yaroslav Askarov for the most shutouts this season so he doesn’t plan on slowing down this effort anytime soon. He stopped 22 Bakersfield shots in this game and the Wranglers put up a total of 37.
