The longest homestand of the season continues for the Calgary Wranglers this week as they host the Bakersfield Condors for a two-game series. The Wranglers are still on an active 10 game winning streak going into these games. They lost their season opener but have won every game since. With a good old-fashioned Flames and Oilers affiliate meeting, they will face a test in the next couple of games.

Notes and expectations
There isn’t much to critique with the Wranglers playing the way they have been. In their last matchup against the San Diego Gulls, it brought out some individual performances that were due for some production this season. One of which, is William Stromgren.
Stromgren had some highlight reel goals towards the end of last season and had a filthy shootout goal this year, but he wasn’t off to the start that was expected. Stromgren has gone a few nights where he hasn’t stood out among his teammates and has seemed a little behind the rushes. However, his confidence boost showed last Thursday with two goals in the opening period against San Diego.
William Stromgren may be a player who gets a chance with the Flames at some point this season, but he doesn’t feel like he’s near the top of the call list at the moment. Instead, it’s hard to ignore skaters like Walker Duehr, Dryden Hunt and Jakob Pelletier, who makeup three of the team’s top four scorers and already have a history and some games under their belts with Flames.
In their last game, Calgary went back to an 11 forward and seven defender system which had Jonathan Aspirot and Yan Kuznetsov rotating pairings most frequently. The above predicted lines are an estimate of what we may see this week but other organization moves may change this further.
Coming down to the Wranglers last week were Adam Klapka and Sam Honzek. Klapka slotted right back into his goaltender screen role and it paid off in multiple goals. Having that 6’8” frame in front of the eyes of netminders was super effective last season and is especially helpful in special teams situations. Honzek was a game-day transaction so he did not make his 2024-25 Wranglers debut that game. He may demote Sam Morton down the lineup to get some more ice time centring.
For these games, the Wranglers need to pick up where they left off. They’ve had their longest break away from games so far this season and get to come back refreshed for one of their division rivals. They have met once before this year back on October 22nd. That game ended in a 2-1 win for the Wranglers with Parker Bell scoring his first goal of the year and Jeremie Poirier scoring in the shootout.
This series kicks off on Tuesday night and then continues on Wednesday. Both games have a 7:00 p.m. MT start time. Tickets are available and streaming options can be found for a fee on FloHockey. Sportsnet 960 The Fan will have the radio call for Wednesday’s game and various FlamesNation contributors such as myself, will have updates on X (formerly Twitter).
