The Flames’ AHL affiliate is taking after their parent team and has been rolling in the wins so far this season. The Wranglers only dropped their season opener and have had a perfect record ever since.
On Friday, Calgary put up a 5-3 win against Henderson, and in their rematch on Saturday, they completed the sweep with another win to put them at a 4-1 record. With their 4-0 victory to kick off the weekend, the Wranglers are now under only the Toronto Marlies in the league standings.
Lineup notes
We’re now past the third game of our Ilya Solovyov watch, and this was not the night for No. 8 to return to the lineup. Solovyov has now missed three games in a row and hopefully isn’t battling something that will keep him out much longer. Other than that, the lines and pairings remained the same, although the Wranglers switched back to Devin Cooley in net for this match-up in Henderson.
Game at a glance
Both teams switched netminders for the second half of this back-to-back weekend. As mentioned above, Devin Cooley was back for his fourth start of the year, while Carl Lindbom was between the pipes for Henderson. There was no delay in getting things going in this game and it really felt like they picked up where they left off on Friday night.
The opening half of the period was very much a back-and-forth effort. There were minimal stoppages as the first penalty call wasn’t made until 13:14 when Yan Kuznetsov was called for holding. Calgary killed off this penalty and continued on through the first. They were sent to the box again before the end of the period when Rory Kerins was called for tripping at 19:03.
At the end of the first period, the Wranglers and Silver Knights were scoreless and Henderson outshot Calgary 16-9. In the second period, Calgary still had over a minute to kill off from the Kerins penalty but still found a way to sway things in their favour.
Jonathan Aspiort made a smart hard pass along the boards up to Clark Bishop and Bishop set up Walker Duehr for a shorthanded opportunity he scored on. This goal came just 13 seconds into the middle frame.
After the penalty expired, the Wranglers got some looks to further extend their lead. Just over three minutes after goal number one, Duehr made it 2-0 with another set-up from Clark Bishop. Bishop picked off a pass down by the blue line and Duehr was right at the front of the net to direct the puck in. This goal came at the 3:21 mark.
Duehr makes it a 2-0 game🔥
A few minutes later, Dryden Hunt scored on Lindbom, but it was waved off at ice level. Even after review, the no-goal call stood. Rory Kerins was the culprit due to goaltender interference on the play but it did not result in a penalty against Calgary. Instead, the rest of the period was played in a “battle of the posts,” style. Both teams had grade-A scoring chances that looked as if they went in but the post kept them both out. For Calgary, David Silye was just inches away from his first goal in the AHL.
By the end of the second period, the Wranglers held their 2-0 lead and a large lead in shots outshooting their opponents 15-4 in the middle frame. In the third, Calgary continued to push for more of a cushion in this game with the majority of the shots in the period.
There were a few special teams situations and one in particular was a big goal for the team and the individual goal-scorer. Walker Duehr scored his hat trick goal at 15:08 towards the end of the Wranglers’ power play and singlehandedly put his team up 3-0. Ilya Nikolaev and William Stromgren assisted on this goal that ended up being Duehr’s first hat trick of his professional career.
Walker Duehr's hat trick goal in Calgary's 4-0 win over Henderson tonight. He's making a case to return to the NHL with 8 points in 5 games with the Wranglers so far.
Henderson pulled Carl Lindbom at 18:43 then the Wranglers cleared the puck out of their zone. Sam Morton put this game away with an empty netter with 1:10 to go in regulation. Lucas Ciona and Walker Duehr assisted. Ciona was tagged for roughing after this play and remained in the box for the rest of the game.
Morton with the spinorama!!
The game finished off and the Wranglers secured their 4-0 win. Cooley earned his first shutout of the season by stopping all 22 opposing shots and Calgary finished with 33 shots on the board. The Wranglers were perfect on the penalty kill and went one for three on the power play.
