Clark Bishop led his team out for his first game as captain on Tuesday night. The Calgary Wranglers continued their homestand hosting the Bakersfield Condors in their second meeting of the season. Their last one was a close shootout decision on the road and this one stayed within a goal for most of the game.
However, the Oilers affiliate were victorious in this game and snapped the Wranglers’ nine-game winning streak with a 2-1 win.

Lineup notes
The Wranglers continued their 11 forwards and seven defender system as they did in their last game. The personnel was just a little different in this game. The team announced a few additional injuries in their injury report that explained some of these changes. Alex Gallant has not played in a game this season so far and still remains week to week with a lower body injury. However, on the positive side, he did skate in the morning skate today with a no-contact jersey on.
New additions to the injury list consisted of Lucas Ciona with an upper body injury and Martin Frk with a lower body injury. Both of their statuses were listed as day-to-day. With Ciona and Frk out, it resulted in some changes to the lines. Sam Honzek easily slotted into the lineup in Frk’s spot and Lucas Ciona has been a rotating scratch on the fourth line so the newly named captain, Clark Bishop, ended up picking up the slack on the fourth line for most of this game.
In other lineup news, the Wranglers also sent Joni Jurmo to their ECHL affiliate, the Rapid City Rush. Jurmo had not appeared in a game with the Wranglers so far this season and would have a hard time finding a spot with the blue line depth ahead of him.
Game at a glance
In this goaltending match-up, it was an even night between the pipes for these netminders. Devin Cooley was matched up against Olivier Rodrigue and both only let in a single goal in this game. The only difference-making play that ultimately decided the game, was an empty-net goal.
The scoring started right from the first period. It looked like these teams were pretty much on the same level out of the gate. Once they hit the midway mark of the period, they found themselves on a 4-on-4 then a Wranglers power play. It seemed the Wranglers were taking the best advantage of these special teams scenarios. Their best shot at opening the scoring was during this power play.
Unfortunately, that little burst of momentum was quickly interrupted by an opening goal from the Condors. A hit along the boards in the Condors zone coughed up the puck and allowed Matthew Savoie to carry the puck all the way into the Wranglers zone and beat Devin Cooley with a shot he appeared to have then slipped past the side of his body.
Savoie’s goal came at 13:18 and was assisted by Seth Griffith and Olivier Rodrigue. The rest of the period was pretty one-sided favouring Bakersfield but the Wranglers got some offensive zone time back in the last two minutes of the frame. By the end of the opening period, the Wranglers trailed the Condors 1-0 and were also behind in shots 17-11.
The first half of the second period didn’t have much outstanding action but a situation at the halfway point caused more of a delay in play. Josh Brown took down Adam Klapka along the boards and acted as if they were about to fight. Klapka did not agree to the fight and Brown was penalized for continuing it along. After a conference with the officials, the calls ended with a boarding call against Klapka due to a hit on another Condor, a roughing call against Brown that Matvey Petrov served and a 10 minute game misconduct call against Brown for continuing the altercation.
After these calls, the efforts were more tilted in the Wranglers’ direction for the rest of the period, but they were unable to find an equalizer. At the end of 40 minutes of play, the Wranglers remained down 1-0 and outshot their opponents 12-9 in this frame.
The third period was a little slower as far as scoring chances go. The shots were few and far between and as it got down to the final minutes, some moves needed to be made. The Calgary coaching staff pulled Devin Cooley at 17:54 but unfortunately, the next recorded shot would be an empty net goal by Seth Griffith at 18:49.
Calgary put Cooley back in for the faceoff then pulled him again in the last 50 seconds of regulation to try and split the lead. They successfully snapped the shutout with Sam Honzek’s first professional goal at 19:21. Sam Morton took a sharp-angled shot and Honzek was right on the doorstep to chip in. Rory Kerins also picked up the secondary assist on this lone Wranglers marker.
Calgary kept Cooley off after this goal to try and get one more miracle goal in the last minute but they were unable to do so. Their first winning streak of the season came to an end and they fell to the Condors 2-1. Shots finished 32-27 for Bakersfield and the only Wrangler in the three stars was Cooley for his 30-save night. He was awarded the third star in this game.
