Catching up on new Flames prospects after the trade frenzy

Photo credit: Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports
The Calgary Flames have oodles of prospects within their system. And they’ve added a bunch more since the start of 2026 via a series of trades.
Since the calendar year began, the Flames have added blueliners Abram Wiebe (from Vegas) and Gavin White (from Dallas), and forwards Max Curran (from Colorado), Brennan Othmann (from the NY Rangers), Jonathan Castagna (from Utah) and Tyson Gross (from college free agency).
All due respect, White is probably the guy with the most untapped upside. He’s in the final year of his entry-level deal and he’s a rock-solid defensive blueliner. If you watched the Wranglers during this season and noted that they really missed the steady play of guys like Ilya Solovyov and Yan Kuznetsov, White is the attempt to provide a bit more of that style of hockey.
Othmann is a bit more exciting. He’s the same age as White and is also closing out his ELC, but he’s play enough games over the past two seasons in the NHL that he’ll graduate from what we consider “prospect” status after this season. What’s fun about Othmann is his versatility: he can play either wing and while he’s probably a bottom-six guy at the NHL level, he brings a lot to the table in terms of the ability to score, check and battle. He might not have the consistency as an offensive producer to be a top NHL scorer, but there’s value there.
On the back end, Wiebe’s in his junior year at the University of North Dakota after reportedly nearly signing with Vegas last year. Returning to college turned out to be a great move, as he’s found not just consistency with NoDak, but also a slightly higher level of performance than a year ago. He was named a Second Team Conference All-Star.
Curran is unfortunately done for the season due to shoulder surgery, but prior to his injury he was one of the top players for the Edmonton Oil Kings. An import pick from Czechia, he was really effective last season with Tri-City (while adapting to a new team, league and country) and was arguably even better this year after moving to the Oil Kings. He’s a 6’3″ centre who won 57% of his draws. He’s headed to the University of Massachusetts (UMass) next season.
Castagna is a junior at Cornell who, like Wiebe, has similarly seen a glow-up in his game this season. He was recently named a ECAC First Team All-Star and a finalist for Defensive Forward of the Year. He’s a 6’2″ centre who won 65% of his draws. He’s legit.
Gross just signed as a free agent after his junior year at St. Cloud State. He was named an NCHC First Team All-Star and his conference’s Defensive Forward of the Year. He’s a 6’3″ centre who won 59% of his draws.
We talk a lot about how great this cohort of Flames college prospects are. And they’re incredibly impressive. But this latest group of additions are primarily players that were already in the NCAA before the major junior eligibility rules changed. So we haven’t seen the full impact on college hockey of all of the newcomers from junior quite yet.
Onto the updates!
