When it comes to drafting players, there’s always a risk-versus-reward factor to consider. It’s fairly rare to find players — especially outside the first round — whose game already looks well-rounded.
In this year’s draft class, Czech forward Vojtech Cihar fits that description quite well.

Scouting report

From the town of Chomutov, Czechia, near the German border, Cihar stands six feet tall, weighs 181 pounds and is a left-shot left-winger.
He played his first full season in Czechia’s top league with HC Karlovy Vary, after a brief six-game stint with the club the previous year.
Steven Ellis of Daily Faceoff — who has Cihar ranked as the 57th-best prospect — offered this evaluation:
“From all my viewings, he seems to find teammates with high-danger chances often. He’s quick, crafty and took very little time to adjust to playing against men in the top Czech league this year. I like how hard he works along the boards, although I wish he committed himself in the same way defensively. But that’s a bit nitpicky when you compare it to his results, and his international play has always been exciting.”
David Phillips of FC Hockey, who ranks Cihar 35th, had this to say:
“Cihar is a hardworking forward who plays a responsible two-way game. His best asset is his accountability — whenever he steps over the boards, you can count on him to give maximum effort every shift. Cihar’s habits set him apart from other players in this year’s draft. He ties up sticks in his own end, sets picks for his linemates, and consistently closes out the point.”
There don’t seem to be many negatives surrounding Cihar’s overall game. While he may not excel in one particular area, he clearly has an excellent foundation to develop into a dependable 200-foot player. He has the speed, hockey IQ and strength — it’s all there, just waiting to be tapped into.

The numbers

Last season, in 43 games with Karlovy Vary in Czechia’s top league, Cihar recorded four goals and five assists. While that may not stand out at a glance, it’s important to consider that Cihar was only 17 for most of the season, playing against experienced, grown men. Among all under-18 players in the league, he had the most productive season and contributed in many other ways on the ice.
Cihar also represented Czechia at two international tournaments this past season. At the World Juniors, he had a goal and an assist, helping Czechia capture a bronze medal. More recently, at the U18 World Championship, he posted three points in five games.

Availability and fit

As many have noted, Cihar is a true “Swiss Army knife” type of player. He does a bit of everything, and the upside he’s shown is highly encouraging. He’s the kind of player every team would like to have, and he could be a welcome addition to the Flames’ prospect group if the opportunity arises.
It’s difficult to predict exactly where Cihar will be taken. As mentioned, there are no glaring weaknesses to his game — but he doesn’t necessarily dominate in any one area either. That could be interpreted in different ways depending on what teams are prioritizing. A club seeking a pure goal scorer or shutdown defensive forward might pass on him.
Scouting organizations have Cihar projected to be selected anywhere from 35th to 117th overall. In terms of reward versus risk, the reward factor seems much higher. He could be a solid second-round pick — or a potential steal in the third.
