The Calgary Flames are going to be one of the more popular teams this week as we inch closer to the trade deadline.

All the talk around the team has been who are they going to sell off their current roster. One thing that hasn’t been discussed much is the idea of bringing in a player, likely a defenceman, at the deadline.

Last season the Flames acquired Troy Stecher and shootout extraordinaire, Nick Ritchie in exchange for Brett Ritchie and Connor Mackey. Two players who were not going to be signed by the Flames in the off-season. Conroy could look to make that kind of trade.

The Flames could also look to bring in a younger player who is on the outside looking in with their current teams. Calgary has a lot of assets that they’ve acquired since the draft last season that they could use on a young player.

These are the types of trades is something the Flames might have interest in making once again. Especially after they move Noah Hanifin.

Let’s take a look around the NHL and see if there are any defencemen meet the criteria listed above.

Elliotte Friedman mentioned Perunovich’s name in his latest 32 Thoughts column at sportsnet.ca as someone who has had some interest from around the NHL.

He is a smaller, talented, puck moving defenceman who haven’t been able to stay healthy in just a couple years playing professional hockey. Because of the depth on the Blues blueline, it looks like Perunovich might be the odd man out.

In 39 AHL games, Perunovich has 42 points which indicates he is a talented player. Using a non-first round draft pick the Flames acquired in one of their many trades on a guy like Perunovich could make a lot of sense for an organization who wants to remain competitive.

With more minutes and more of an opportunity, Perunovich could turn into an effective, everyday NHL defenseman.

To St. Louis: 2024 2nd Round Pick (the worse of the Flames and Stars picks)

It looks as though Harris is the odd man out among a group of young, talented defensemen on the Montreal blueline.

Harris has only played in 35 games this season and has been a healthy scratch for almost 40% of Canadiens games.

Harris has one year remaining on his contract with a cap hit of $1.4 million. Could this be the type of player the Flames look to bring in between now and the start of next season?

This is an interesting option for the Flames as Barrie has the potential to be a perfect fit. What is the one thing the Flames have struggled with most this season? It’s the power play. What is Barrie’s strength as a player? Running power plays.

Barrie has a cap hit of $4.5 million and is a UFA at the end of the season. Barrie has requested a trade after having his ice time cut down and being a healthy scratch for the Nashville Predators.

Because of the situation he is in and the cap space he takes up, there won’t be many, if any, suitors for his services. The Flames might be able to acquire him for pennies on the dollar.

The Flames could play Barrie on the third pairing and let him quarterback the top power play unit to try and spark that group. If things work out, then great. Maybe you sign him to a one-year deal so a guy like Jeremie Poirier can continue to develop in the AHL after missing nearly the entire season to injury.
