A pair of the Calgary Flames’ top prospects are headed to the Bay Area for the 2024 AHL All-Star Classic in early February. Calgary Wranglers goaltender Dustin Wolf and leading scorer Matt Coronato were named to the event on Wednesday. They’ll play for the Pacific Division, led by Wranglers head coach Trent Cull, at the event.
A seventh-round pick way back in 2019 – selected fourth-from-last at the event – Dustin Wolf is good at stopping pucks. Drafted from the Western Hockey League’s Everett Silvertips, Wolf was named the WHL’s top goaltender in 2019-20 and 2020-21, and then the AHL’s top goaltender in 2021-22 and 2022-23. He was also named the AHL’s most valuable player last season.
Midway through this season, Wolf remains one of the AHL’s best netminders. He’s also gotten a few NHL games in and hasn’t looked out of place in his outings. In 21 AHL appearances, he’s 15-5-1 with four shutouts, a 2.30 goals against average and .930 save percentage.
A first-round pick from 2021, Matt Coronato began this season with the Flames but couldn’t really find a role of his own on the big club. (It didn’t help that his tenure overlapped with a 10-game span where the Flames looked, frankly, awful.) Coronato was sent to the AHL in early November and has been the Wranglers’ most consistently dangerous offensive player. In 25 AHL games, he has 12 goals and 28 points.
It’s Wolf’s second appearance at the AHL’s All-Star festivities and Coronato’s first.
The 2024 AHL All-Star Classic, hosted in San Jose by the Barracuda, goes Feb. 4-5.
