If your hockey club isn’t a sure-fire Stanley Cup playoffs participant, the run-up to the NHL’s trade deadline is all about maximizing flexibility.
The Calgary Flames are, as of this writing, in a playoff spot. They are, however, far from a sure thing. There’s a decent chance they may miss the playoffs, while there’s a better chance that their American Hockey League affiliate, the Calgary Wranglers, will qualify for the Calder Cup playoffs. As such, we’re expecting some minor moves to maintain roster flexibility for both the NHL and AHL clubs.
To be eligible to play in the AHL after the NHL trade deadline, a player has to be on an AHL roster as of the trade deadline. As such, we typically see NHL clubs assign players to the AHL before the trade deadline and then call them back up afterwards. The AHL’s rule, combined with the NHL’s limit of four “regular” (non-emergency) call-ups after the deadline are designed to prevent NHL clubs from stockpiling players for the stretch drive, and then parachuting them into the AHL if they miss the playoffs.
For the Flames, the likely candidates to be sent down prior to the trade deadline are forward Adam Klapka and defender Ilya Solovyov. Klapka is waiver exempt this season, while Solovyov cleared waivers in October and has yet to spend 30 days on the NHL roster, so he’s also exempt. Both players seem likely to be with the Flames for much of the rest of the season, but it makes sense to maintain flexibility and keep them eligible for the AHL post-season.
