After two trades and add a brand-new member of the organization on Tuesday night, the Calgary Flames are putting the coffee on and getting back to work on the second day of the 2020 NHL Draft.

Picks

The Flames definitely have seven more picks at their disposal on Day Two of the draft:
  • 2nd round, 50th overall
  • 3rd round, 72nd overall (from NY Rangers) [from trading down]
  • 3rd round, 80th overall (from Arizona, via Colorado and Washington) [from trading down]
  • 4th round, 96th overall (from San Jose, via Montreal and Buffalo) [from the Michael Frolik deal]
  • 5th round, 143rd overall
  • 6th round, 174th overall
  • 7th round, 205th overall
Calgary’s third round pick is 81st overall. But they owe a third to Chicago as part of the Erik Gustafsson trade – either their own or Edmonton’s, whichever is higher. Edmonton owes Calgary a third from the Milan Lucic trade in either 2020 or 2021. If Edmonton gives the Flames this year’s third, the Flames will keep 81st overall and have three. Otherwise, Chicago will draft 81st instead of Calgary.

So who’s left?

31 players were selected on Tuesday, including quite a few that were way off most draft lists. Here are the the 15 best remaining players on Bob McKenzie’s draft ranking:
  • 23rd – LW J.J. Peterka (EHC Muenchen, DEL)
  • 27th – D William Wallinder (MODO, SHL)
  • 28th – RW Noel Gunler (Lulea, SHL)
  • 32nd – D Helge Grans (Malmo, SHL)
  • 33rd – D Jeremie Poirier (Saint John, QMJHL)
  • 34th – C Jan Mysak (Hamilton, OHL)
  • 35th – C Murat Khusnutdinov (SKA St. Petersburg, KHL)
  • 36th – D Tyler Kleven (US National Development, USHL)
  • 37th – D Ryan O’Rourke (Sault Ste. Marie, OHL)
  • 38th – D Topi Niemela (Karpat, SM-Liiga)
  • 39th – C Ty Smilanic (US National Development, USHL)
  • 41st – RW Sam Colangelo (Chicago, USHL)
  • 43rd – LW Luke Tuch (US National Development, USHL)
  • 44th – D Daemon Hunt (Moose Jaw, WHL)
  • 45th – LW Will Cuylle (Windsor, OHL)
There’s a lot of depth in this draft, and the Flames should be able to find some good hockey players.
