William Stromgren had a good year with the Calgary Wranglers last season and took steps ahead from his rookie season. He was fourth in team scoring and the thing that kept him from taking the next step into an NHL debut was his consistency. Stromgren was really streaky last season where he’d have a run of multi-point nights then nothing the next two or three games.
He’s shown where he can take his game and with some minor adjustments, he could be one of the best on the Calgary AHL squad this season.

Meets expectations

The expectation is William Stromgren comes to the Wranglers with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove. He talked up his frustrations at the end of last season and knows where his game can be if he can find that consistency. His off-season work will show as the season gets started and he’s playing in games on a regular basis. A couple of spread out games in a preseason scenario doesn’t hold the same weight as a three to four game week with travel in between.
Standing at 6’4″, this Swedish forward has side on his side in addition to stick handling skills that can make him dangerous on the ice. Stromgren needs to be that player pushing for top line minutes to be able to knock on the door. As far as the line up to the Flames goes, many of his peers have broken through that door and he should be one of the next guys knocking on it.

Exceeds expectations

Stromgren’s participation in the prospect camp and into Flames training camp was good but not considered a standout performance among the group he was with. His assignment to the Wranglers did not come as a surprise but some early tools to guide him through his season in the AHL are a great start.
For Stromgren to leap over the expectations many have set for him, he would need to explode on the production side of things and do it on a very regular basis. Be the guy right out of the gate making a push to be one of the top scorers on the team and in the league. From there, he’s impossible to ignore and his timeline to play in the NHL is a matter of when and not if.

Below expectations

If Stromgren makes no jumps forward in his game this season, he will fall below what is expected of him. Stromgren can still have some pockets of stand out performances but if he is unable to string them together, he’s going to get passed on the depth chart. Last season, Stromgren put up 49 points in 70 games. It was a step ahead of what he did in his rookie season but still not the breakout year he and many others expected out of him after seeing him shine in Wranglers playoffs in 2023-24.
Stromgren has two years of North American hockey on his hockey resume so if he is able to find that consistency in his game now and play with swagger and assurance, he could have a very exciting year in the AHL and beyond.
