The Calgary Flames have added some forward depth in a trade with the New York Rangers. Per multiple reports, the Flames have acquired forward Brennan Othmann from the Rangers in exchange for forward prospect Jacob Battaglia.
Othmann is a 23-year-old left shot forward that can play both wings. He was selected in the first round, 16th overall, by the Rangers in the 2021 NHL Draft. He went pro in 2023-24 and he’s been bouncing back and forth between the Rangers and their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack. This season, he has one goal in 17 NHL games with the Rangers and 16 points in 26 games with the Wolf Pack. He was with Hartford at the time of the trade so we’ll see if he goes to the NHL Flames or AHL Wranglers.
Battaglia is a 19-year-old left shot forward that can play centre or either wing. he was selected in the second round, 62nd overall, in the 2024 NHL Draft, using a pick acquired from Dallas in the Chris Tanev trade. Battaglia was awesome last season and ended up earning an entry-level deal at the end of the season, but he’s struggled a bit to produce this season, split between the OHL’s Kingston Frontenacs and Flint Firebirds. He has 26 goals and 43 points in 58 OHL games this season.
The Flames had a bit of a log-jam developing with forwards in Battaglia’s age group, so it seems like this move would aim to alleviate that glut of forwards while giving a bit of a boost to the pro level forward depth.
