<p>The Calgary Flames have made a big splash in the trade market. Per multiple reports, the club has acquired forward Tyler Toffoli from the Montreal Canadiens.</p>
<p>The Flames have sent Tyler Pitlick, prospect Emil Heineman, their 2022 first-round pick and their 2023 fifth-round pick to Montreal to complete the trade. If their first-round pick in 2022 is a top 10 pick, Montreal will instead receive their 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 fourth-round pick.</p>

<p>Toffoli, 29, is a high end offensive player. He hasn&#8217;t been amazing in Montreal, but the whole team has had some challenges this season and the prospect of reuniting with former coach Darryl Sutter has to be exciting for him &#8211; they won a Stanley Cup together back in 2014. He carries a $4.25 million cap hit that runs for two more seasons and expires following the 2023-24 season. He gives the Flames some offensive oomph on the wing and really improves the scoring depth for the club.</p>
<p>Pitlick, 30, just hasn&#8217;t really moved the needle for the Flames. At all. When he&#8217;s been healthy, he just hasn&#8217;t clicked with anybody he&#8217;s played with and has been a non-factor in all three zones. He carries a $1.75 million cap hit, and heads to a Montreal team that could use some established NHL bodies and he&#8217;ll get a chance to establish himself again there. The net cap impact of the Pitlick-for-Toffoli (Tyler-for-Tyler) swap is adding $2.5 million in cap hits for the remainder of the season.</p>
<p>Heineman, 20, was acquired from the Florida Panthers in the Sam Bennett trade. He&#8217;s a really solid B-level prospect and projects as a smart two-way player, but it&#8217;s unclear what kind of offensive force he&#8217;ll be in North America. But he&#8217;s a solid addition to a growing collage of interesting Habs prospects. He&#8217;s well-regarded by prospect honks, but it&#8217;s fairly impressive that it&#8217;s him headed to Montreal rather than one of the &#8220;core four&#8221; top prospects of Jakob Pelletier, Connor Zary, Matt Coronato or Dustin Wolf.</p>
<p>The Flames now have four selections in the 2022 NHL Draft: two second-rounders (their own and Florida&#8217;s), plus their own fifth and seventh rounders.</p>
