The Calgary Flames have made a big splash in the trade market. Per multiple reports, the club has acquired forward Tyler Toffoli from the Montreal Canadiens.

The Flames have sent Tyler Pitlick, prospect Emil Heineman, their 2022 first-round pick and their 2023 fifth-round pick to Montreal to complete the trade. If their first-round pick in 2022 is a top 10 pick, Montreal will instead receive their 2023 first-round pick and a 2024 fourth-round pick.

Toffoli, 29, is a high end offensive player. He hasn’t been amazing in Montreal, but the whole team has had some challenges this season and the prospect of reuniting with former coach Darryl Sutter has to be exciting for him – they won a Stanley Cup together back in 2014. He carries a $4.25 million cap hit that runs for two more seasons and expires following the 2023-24 season. He gives the Flames some offensive oomph on the wing and really improves the scoring depth for the club.

Pitlick, 30, just hasn’t really moved the needle for the Flames. At all. When he’s been healthy, he just hasn’t clicked with anybody he’s played with and has been a non-factor in all three zones. He carries a $1.75 million cap hit, and heads to a Montreal team that could use some established NHL bodies and he’ll get a chance to establish himself again there. The net cap impact of the Pitlick-for-Toffoli (Tyler-for-Tyler) swap is adding $2.5 million in cap hits for the remainder of the season.

Heineman, 20, was acquired from the Florida Panthers in the Sam Bennett trade. He’s a really solid B-level prospect and projects as a smart two-way player, but it’s unclear what kind of offensive force he’ll be in North America. But he’s a solid addition to a growing collage of interesting Habs prospects. He’s well-regarded by prospect honks, but it’s fairly impressive that it’s him headed to Montreal rather than one of the “core four” top prospects of Jakob Pelletier, Connor Zary, Matt Coronato or Dustin Wolf.

The Flames now have four selections in the 2022 NHL Draft: two second-rounders (their own and Florida’s), plus their own fifth and seventh rounders.
